Manslaughter charge dropped in Gaza war case

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An attorney says Israel's military prosecutor has dropped a manslaughter charge against a soldier suspected of killing two Palestinian women during Israel's war against Gaza's Hamas rulers nearly four years ago.

The infantry sergeant had been the only soldier facing such a charge stemming from an offensive that killed some 1,400 Palestinians, including hundreds of civilians, and 13 Israelis.

Human rights groups have called for independent investigations of what they said were dozens of suspected unlawful killings during the war. The military instead launched its own investigation of some deaths.

Defense attorney Oded Savoray said Sunday that as part of a plea deal, his client was convicted of shooting without permission and will serve 45 days in prison. Savoray says prosecutors failed to prove his client killed anyone.
