Syrian troops advance in central city

By ALBERT AJI
Associated Press

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Syrian government troops gained ground in clashes Friday in two rebel-held neighborhoods in the central city of Homs, edging closer to a historic mosque and closing in on opposition fighters in the area, state TV and activists said.

The advance came amid a wide offensive by President Bashar Assad's forces, launched in late June, to try to recapture rebel areas in Homs, Syria's third largest city.

With about 1 million residents, Homs lies along a main artery linking the capital, Damascus, with regime strongholds on the Mediterranean coast to the west. It has played a key role in the country's civil war, now in its third year, and the struggle for control of Homs has also underscored the conflict's increasingly sectarian undertones.

Activists, who consider Homs "the capital of the revolution," say the regime wants to capture the entire city to include it in a future Alawite state - stretching from Homs to the coast - where Assad could possibly make his last stand. Assad is a member of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, while most of the rebels fighting to topple his regime are Sunnis.

In recent weeks, Assad's troops have captured several nearby rebel-held areas, including the towns of Qusair and Talkalkh near the border with Lebanon.

State TV said Friday that troops advanced in Homs' northern neighborhoods of Khaldiyeh and Jouret el-Shayah.

The report said the government forces were getting close to Khaldiyeh's 13th-century mosque of Khalid Ibn al-Walid, famous for its nine domes and two minarets. On Monday, government troops shelled the mosque, damaging the tomb of Ibn al-Walid, a revered figure in Islam, inside it.

An activist in the city who only identified himself as Abu Bilal for fear of government reprisals said the troops were now about 50 meters (yards) from the mosque, which has been badly damaged in recent fighting. "Resistance cannot stand up to tanks, warplanes and mortars," Abu Bilal said, speaking from the city via Skype.

In Damascus, officials said pro-government troops were advancing in battles with rebel forces in the now mostly empty Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp. Clashes in the camp, which has mostly been under rebel control since last year, broke out earlier this week.

Since the start of the unrest, Syria's half-million Palestinians have struggled to remain on the sidelines but many were eventually split between pro-and anti-Assad groups. In particular, young Palestinian refugees joined the rebels in the fight against Assad's regime.

Thousands of the camp's residents have fled to escape the fighting and have gone to other areas in Syria or to neighboring Lebanon.

Anwar Raja, a spokesman for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, which is pro-Assad, said Friday that the Palestinians who are fighting with government forces want to "cleanse the camp of terrorists' gangs" and bring back its residents.

Khaled Abdul-Majid of the Popular Struggle Front, another pro-government faction, said the Palestinian fighters, known as Palestinian Popular Committees have captured nearly a third of the mostly empty camp.

Meanwhile, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Syrian warplanes bombed an office of the main al-Qaida-linked rebel group in the northern city of Aleppo.

The strike late Thursday at the local headquarters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant killed six members of the jihadi group, said the Observatory, which has a network of activists on the ground.

Latest toy for digital cameras hails from the 19th century

Lomography

The Petzval lens, mounted on Canon and Nikon cameras.

While digital camera makers compete on the sleekest, most high-tech lenses and image stabilization, analog photo lovers at Lomography have decided to take inspiration from the earliest days of the art instead, recreating a unique and influential lens that first appeared back in 1840 ? right down to its brass case and distinctive background blur.

Cameras in the 1840s weren't quite as capable as the ones we have today. Part of this was that the actual photographic process wasn't quite mature, and formulas for photosensitive plates and prints were constantly competing and being revised.

But the lenses used then were also fairly crude ? couldn't gather much light, required long exposures ? and were not nearly as precise or complex as today's. Joseph Petzval, a 19th century math professor at the University of Vienna, worked out a better lens design that hit F/3.6, making it many times faster than its rivals. The Petzval lens was widely used in the 1800s, but times changed, and it was more or less left in the past ? until now.

Lomo pix

Lomography

The Petzval's distorted bokeh, or background blur, is a highly sought-after effect.

Lomography wanted to recreate this historic lens, which these days is coveted for its interesting optical effects. So the staff worked with a Russian optics company to figure out what made the Petzval lens tick. Amazingly, they've managed to remake it, funky aperture system and brass casing included.

In fact, they've actually improved it, at least for today's cameras. The new Petzval not only features a wider aperture (F/2.2), but it will be available on both Canon and Nikon DSLR mounts. Before, you'd have to buy some weird adapter, but not anymore.

But most importantly, the beautiful, swirling background blur is there in all its glory. Sure, you can get a similar effect on certain Russian lenses from a few decades back (for cheaper, too) ? but there's nothing like the original. Or at least a reinvention of the original.

The new Petzval lens hit Kickstarter Thursday morning, and as of this writing just crossed the $400,000 line ? four times its initial goal. You can still pledge and receive a lens for $400, which is $100 less than what it will go for once it enters production.

Classic Coupes: 7 Sleek Rides of the 1920s and 30s

"Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles," an exhibition at Nashville's Frist Center for the Visual Arts, opened last month and will continue through Sept. 15. Curated by Ken Gross, former director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, the collection showcases custom and one-of-a-kind classic cars made from 1929 to 1941, a time when automakers sought to communicate streamlined aerodynamics, luxury and optimism about the future of the machine age.

1929 Bugatti Type 46 Semi-Profile Coupe

The Bugatti on display at the Frist is a pristine period recreation. Originally a two-door sedan, its chassis was made in 1929 and bodied in 1930 by coach builder Old ich Ulik of Czechoslovakia. It was re-bodied into a coupe by Barry Price. This classic car features dramatic sweep panels, steep windscreens, valance-free fenders (no metal added to the side of the fender to prevent splashing along the body) and an elephant-hide leather interior.

Facebook crime page follower helps police solve San Pedro cellphone theft

| POLICE NEWS | BLOG: SOUTH BAY CRIME, COURT NEWS | FACEBOOK

A San Pedro woman caught on video stealing an iPhone from a supermarket check stand counter admitted to a detective Tuesday that it was her, crying, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," police said.

Maria Veronica Gonzalez, 45, was identified by a woman who saw the video on the Facebook page South Bay Crime and Courts and relayed her suspicion to police through the Daily Breeze reporter who administers the page.

Los Angeles police Detective Don Eldridge said he called Gonzalez, asked her to come to the station and showed her the video.

"She admitted it," he said. "She said, 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry.' ... She said she gave the phone to a friend and she's going to get it back."

Eldridge released the video surveillance tape showing the crime to the Daily Breeze last week with the hope someone could identify the woman. Although the theft was not a major crime, it was captured clearly on video.

The tipster, a follower of the crime page, said in an interview that she recognized the woman from the video.

The crime occurred May 13 after a 45-year-old San Pedro woman left her cellphone on the check stand at Numero Uno Supermarket at Fifth Street and Pacific Avenue.

Moments later, a woman in a red top with a tattoo on the back of her right shoulder walked to the check stand to buy her groceries, saw the phone and picked it up. She appeared for a moment to consider turning it in, but instead walked over to a male companion and gave it to him.

The woman and her companion completed her purchase "" a tub of Neapolitan ice cream, green onions, strawberry juice bars, steak picado and coffee "" walked to a green Kia Soul parked in a handicapped space, and drove away. Neither the woman nor companion appeared to be disabled.

Eldridge said he asked Gonzalez if she was disabled and was told her grandmother was. Eldridge said he reminded Gonzalez the handicapped space is only for the disabled.

Because the crime was a misdemeanor, Gonzalez was not arrested. Eldridge will file his reports with the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office for charges and Gonzalez will be given a court date. In addition to any criminal penalties, Gonzalez could be required to pay restitution to the victim even if the phone is returned. The victim had to purchase a new phone, Eldridge said.

Eldridge called the theft a "straight crime of opportunity." He thanked the public for helping to solve the case.

Portable shelters couldn't save 19 firefighters

(AP) ? In a heartbreaking sight, a long line of vans from a coroner's office carried the bodies of 19 elite firefighters out of the tiny mountain town of Yarnell on Monday, as the wind-driven wildfire that claimed the men's lives burned out of control.

About 200 more firefighters arrived to the scorching mountains, doubling the number of firefighters battling the blaze, ignited by lightning.

Many of them were wildfire specialists like the 19 fatally trapped Sunday ? a group of firefighters known as Hotshots called to face the nation's fiercest wildfires.

With no way out, the Prescott-based crew did what they were trained to do: They unfurled their foil-lined, heat-resistant tarps and rushed to cover themselves. But that last, desperate line of defense couldn't save them.

The deaths of the Granite Mountain Hotshots marked the nation's biggest loss of firefighters in a wildfire in 80 years. Only one member of the 20-person crew survived, and that was because he was moving the unit's truck at the time.

Arizona's governor called it "as dark a day as I can remember" and ordered flags flown at half-staff.

"I know that it is unbearable for many of you, but it also is unbearable for me. I know the pain that everyone is trying to overcome and deal with today," said Gov. Jan Brewer, her voice catching several times as she addressed reporters and residents at Prescott High School in the town of 40,000.

President Barack Obama called Brewer on Monday from Africa and reinforced his commitment to providing necessary federal support to battle the fire that spread to 13 square miles after destroying 50 homes. More than 200 homes were threatened in the town of 700 people.

Obama also offered his administration's help to state officials investigating the tragedy, and predicted it will force government leaders to answer broader questions about how they handle increasingly destructive and deadly wildfires.

Brewer said the blaze "exploded into a firestorm" that overran the crew.

The blaze grew from 200 acres to about 2,000 in a matter of hours.

Southwest incident team leader Clay Templin said the crew and its commanders were following safety protocols, and it appears the fire's erratic nature simply overwhelmed them.

The Hotshot team had spent recent weeks fighting fires in New Mexico and Prescott before being called to Yarnell, entering the smoky wilderness over the weekend with backpacks, chainsaws and other heavy gear to remove brush and trees as a heat wave across the Southwest sent temperatures into the triple digits.

Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo said he feared the worst when he received a call Sunday afternoon from someone assigned to the fire.

"All he said was, 'We might have bad news. The entire Hotshot crew deployed their shelters,'" Fraijo said. "When we talk about deploying the shelters, that's an automatic fear, absolutely. That's a last-ditch effort to save yourself when you deploy your shelter."

Arizona Forestry Division spokesman Mike Reichling said all 19 victims had deployed their emergency shelters as they were trained to do.

As a last resort, firefighters are supposed to step into the shelters, lie face down on the ground and pull the fire-resistant fabric completely over themselves. The shelter is designed to reflect heat and trap cool, breathable air inside for a few minutes while a wildfire burns over a person.

But its success depends on firefighters being in a cleared area away from fuels and not in the direct path of a raging inferno of heat and hot gases.

The glue holding the layers of the shelter together begins to come apart at about 500 degrees, well above the 300 degrees that would almost immediately kill a person.

"It'll protect you, but only for a short amount of time. If the fire quickly burns over you, you'll probably survive that," said Prescott Fire Capt. Jeff Knotek. But "if it burns intensely for any amount of time while you're in that thing, there's nothing that's going to save you from that."

Fire officials gave no further details about the shelters being deployed. The bodies were taken to Phoenix for autopsies to determine exactly how the firefighters died.

The U.S. has 110 Hotshot crews, according to the U.S. Forest Service website. They typically have about 20 members each and go through specialized training.

Many of those killed were graduates of Prescott High, including 28-year-old Clayton Whitted, who as a firefighter would work out on the same campus where he played football for the Prescott Badgers from 2000 to 2004.

The school's football coach, Lou Beneitone, said Whitted was the type of athlete who "worked his fanny off."

"He wasn't a big kid, and many times in the game, he was overpowered by big men, and he still got after it. He knew, 'This man in front of me is a lot bigger and stronger than me,' but he'd try it and he'd smile trying it," Beneitone said.

He and Whitted had talked a few months ago about how this year's fire season could be a "rough one."

"I shook his hand, gave him a hug, and said, 'Be safe out there,'" Beneitone recalled. "He said, 'I will, Coach.'"

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the Yarnell area. In addition to the flames, downed power lines and exploding propane tanks continued to threaten what was left of the town, said fire information officer Steve Skurja. A light rain fell over the area but did little to slow the fire.

"It's a very hazardous situation right now," Skurja said.

Arizona is in the midst of a historic drought that has left large parts of the state highly flammable.

"Until we get a significant showing of the monsoons, it's showtime, and it's dangerous, really dangerous," incident commander Roy Hall said.

The National Fire Protection Association website lists the last wildfire to kill more firefighters as the 1933 Griffith Park blaze in Los Angeles, which killed 29. The biggest loss of firefighters in U.S. history was 343, killed in the 9/11 attack on New York.

In 1994, the Storm King Fire near Glenwood Springs, Colo., killed 14 firefighters who were overtaken by an explosion of flames.

A makeshift memorial of flower bouquets and American flags formed at the Prescott fire station where the crew was based.

More than 1,000 people turned out Monday to a gym at the Prescott campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to honor those killed.

At the end of the ceremony, dozens of wildfire fighters sporting Hotshot shirts and uniforms from other jurisdictions marched down the bleachers to the front of the auditorium, their heavy work boots drumming a march on the wooden steps.

They bowed their heads for a moment of silence in memory of their fallen comrades as slides bearing each man's name and age were projected behind them.
