Email Promoting: How To Market Effectively Without Becoming SPAM

TIP! Text only emails certainly have their benefits. Images do add a visual quality to email but only if they load correctly, and at times they won?t.

You may be wondering what marketing techniques are best when it comes to growing your business. One of the most effective and time tested strategies for marketing to current and potential customers is marketing via email. This article has several strategies to make the most of your marketing email campaign.

TIP! Construct your email so that it sounds personal. As with all other marketing techniques, customers usually do more business with those they feel a connection with.

Be certain that your messages are not simply sales presentations. Emails should be newsletters that carry pertinent information about your niche, the industry or your business. If you only make a sales effort, you may have unhappy customers that unsubscribe from your emails. Busy people need a reason to keep reading you emails and including interesting information will help you to serve your primary goal of increasing sales.

TIP! Make sure you use Alt tags to your benefit when you add images to emails. If the image doesn?t load, the tag will replace it.

Do not send out emails that rely on images to deliver critical information. Many modern email clients ? web-based ones, especially ? will not display images automatically. Your message will become impossible to read if the images are not displayed correctly. Make sure that the most crucial information is readable and that images have alt tags.

TIP! With any email marketing materials, limit the use of graphics. Quite a few email reading programs available block graphics, making it possible that many of your intended readers can?t read the email properly.

Holidays are an important consideration when it comes to email marketing plans. You should have the whole year planned out. Most holidays and memorial days are beneficial to retailers in some way, so create targeted email strategies to take advantage of Christmas, Mother?s Day, Halloween, and other appropriate occasions. You can better your sales by marketing in the slower periods of the year.

TIP! Never email a customer without their consent. When you send unsolicited emails, you run the risk of being reported as a spammer, and your emails will probably head straight into the trash.

Ensure you do not add an email address to your email address list unless you have authorization from the person to whom it belongs. If you have an email list with customers that don?t want to receive emails from you, it can hurt your business. In addition, you may end up being reported and, ultimately, banned by your Internet service provider for breaking rules regarding spam.

TIP! Your messages should remain as brief and on the point as possible. If it is longer than two paragraphs, the excess will likely go unread.

Make sure you have permission before emailing someone. If you?re like most people, you get penny stock and mortgage emails daily, and block them with a spam filter. To send unwanted mail can actually work against your business. The best way to use marketing with email is towards customers who are interested.

TIP! Be sure the emails you send are short and to the point. Use clear, direct language whenever possible.

Your subject line should be interesting and informative. When a customer is checking their inbox, the email subject title is what they will see first. Make sure it is catchy and strong so that they are tempted to read on further. Getting recipients to open the message is the hardest part, and a good subject line should get them to keep reading.

TIP! Brand your emails by using your logo, color palette and a similar layout to your website. Because your subscribers have some familiarity with your website, they associate your colors, logo and designs with you.

Make all of your marketing emails personal. You can do much more than inserting a first name into a generic message. Utilize all information your subscribers have given you, no matter how small it may seem. You can create small categories of subscribers based on common interests, and tailor your messages to speak to these small groups of customers.

TIP! Personalizing your email marketing will make it more important in the eyes of your reader. When potential customers feel your message is generic, they will be more inclined to delete it and prevent future messages from getting through to their inbox.

If your company has developed a branding practice prior to the start of your email marketing program, then keep your future emails consistent with that established branding. Keep your color scheme consistent and be certain to include the unique logo for your company with every message you plan on sending out. When your brand has earned trust and has a good reputation prior to the emails being sent out, these emails will simply take full advantage of the good name that you have.

TIP! Always get permission from your customers before you correspond with them via email. By doing so, your gain customer trust, and protect your reputation.

Marketing through the use of emails is a fantastic way to help promote your business. Use the ideas here to make all your marketing plans better than the others and you will also find new and exciting ways to make emails new and relevant to your customers.

That brings to mind?..

Black Friday: Think it's crazy in the US? You should see China's version.

China doesn't officially celebrate Black Friday, but Nov. 11 has become the biggest shopping day on the Chinese calendar. E-commerce sales alone reached $4.6 billion this year.?

They don?t celebrate Thanksgiving Day here, of course, but Nov. 11, has become the biggest shopping day on the Chinese calendar.

That?s because it is known as ?Singles Day? (11.11 ? geddit?) ? a type of Valentine?s Day for those without lovers, but with friends to whom they give gifts.

Online stores have cashed in on the idea, offering mouthwatering discounts on everything from cars to clothes to tempt consumers online on Singles Day, turning it into a retail bonanza? and it works.?

?I hadn?t planned to buy anything but I heard there would be great discounts so I went online to have a look,? says Liu Na, a 20-something book editor. ?I bought a blouse and a bag for myself, at 50 percent off.?

This year, e-commerce sales on Nov. 11 reached $4.6 billion, according to an estimate by the Economic Herald, a specialist daily in Shandong province.

That may not look like much compared with ?Black Friday? spending in the US (which topped $11.4 billion last year), until you take a couple of things into account:?

First, average Chinese salaries are 10 times smaller than average American salaries.

Second, this is just online. A comparable day in America might be ?Cyber Monday,? coming up after the weekend. Last year online US shoppers shelled out $1.25 billion ? little more than a quarter of what their Chinese counterparts spent two weeks ago.

The Chinese government may not be keen on the political corners of the Internet, but it loves the commercial aspect; its current five year plan for the economy foresees a fourfold jump in e-commerce?from 2010 levels to $2.9 trillion by 2015.

China has the world?s largest online population, at 538 million, and has more online shoppers than anywhere else too: On Nov. 11, some 213 million people ? nearly half of all Chinese Internet users ? visited one of Alibaba?s two retail platforms. Alibaba, which runs the two biggest e-commerce sites in China, reported sales of $2.94 billion on Nov.11.

Ten million consumers ? more than the population of Greece ? clicked on an Alibaba site in the first minute of Nov. 11, in the dead of night.

The massive Singles Day sales promotions are expected to boost the number of online shoppers even further. Ms. Liu for example, says she has normally shopped in bricks-and-mortar stores, but her Singles Day experience has converted her.

??Apart from the discounts, it?s a lot more convenient,? she says.

Highland Park woman's website offers support to breast cancer ...

By Adam Smeltz

Published: Saturday, December 1, 2012, 7:58?p.m.
Updated 33 minutes ago

Sylvia Lowery-Lewis knew what she faced.

Diagnosed with breast cancer, she understood the triple-negative strain attacking her body could be especially aggressive and deadly. The cancer shocked and frightened her, she said, but she drew strength from her tight-knit family as she underwent a partial mastectomy in January and two rounds of chemotherapy.

Many cancer patients turn inward, but Lowery-Lewis of Highland Park made public her plight in order to bring awareness to triple-negative breast cancer and the importance of cancer screening.

Married and a mother of six, Lowery-Lewis told her story in ?Journey for Recovery,? a Tribune-Review special report published Sept. 30 that spotlighted breast cancer among black women.

She died on Oct. 22 at age 60, about 17 months after her diagnosis.

?For me, (cancer) made me stronger because it has made me a fighter to get information out,? she said about two months before her death. ?If I can turn the light on three people about this, I have done my job.?

Lowry-Lewis?s daughter, Jamine Lewis, said her mother worried that women coping with breast cancer might be hesitant to talk about it. Her mother wanted to put them at ease with asking questions.

?She wanted to make sure that people were more inclined to speak up, rather than keep it a secret, especially in the African-American community,? said Lewis, 35, of Highland Park.

National studies show death rates from breast cancer are 41 percent higher for black women than white women, even though fewer black women develop the disease.

Lowery-Lewis built a website, triplenegativebreastcancerawareness.com, and aimed to work through churches to foster conversation about the disease.

?I know that she wanted to dialogue and put all of this on her website,? Lewis said. ?She always felt a need to hurry up and get that information on there.?

As many as 30 percent of breast cancers in black women are triple-negative, while the percentage in all patients is 14 percent to 20 percent, according to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The death risk from triple-negative cancer can be three times higher than those of more common cancer types, the journal Cancer reported. This cancer lacks three hormone receptors that are a key conduit for treatment.

?Cancer in many ways is disarming and disempowering ? that diagnosis alone,? said Dr. Dwight Heron, Lowery-Lewis? oncologist and the director of radiation oncology services at UPMC Cancer Centers. Lowery-Lewis ?was the kind of person, just with her own personality, who faced it head-on, looked it in the eye and said: ?I want to beat you. I?m going to beat you.? ?

She pledged to ?arm other people to carry on the mission because we?ve got to beat this thing,? Heron said.

The Rev. Barbara Gunn said no one expected Lowery-Lewis to die so soon. Her memorial service was conducted Oct. 30 at Unity Baptist Church in Braddock.

?She never hinted in any way that she was not going to make it through this,? said Gunn, a friend and the pastor at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in North Versailles. Yet, ?I think she always knew there was more of a possibility that she wouldn?t (make it) than if she would. That?s why she was in such a hurry to get something done? for public awareness.

The women met at a Staples store in the North Hills where Lowery-Lewis worked as a supervisor, Gunn said.

Lowery-Lewis reconnected there with Sharon Herring-Turner, 61, a childhood friend from Braddock who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Herring-Turner?s cancer is in remission.

?I?ve never seen Sylvia in a bad mood ? never ? not even with the cancer,? said Herring-Turner, of Perry Hilltop in the North Side. ?If she could do anything for you, she would go out of her way to do it.?

But, she said, ?Her passing makes me think: Is (my cancer) coming back??

In an August interview, Lowery-Lewis spoke glowingly about her husband, Johnnie Lewis, 70, who survives at home. She was very much ?still in love,? she said.

?I don?t know what tomorrow?s going to bring,? she said, ?but I try to live my days to the fullest that I can.?

Lung cancer patients with pockets of resistance prolong disease control by 'weeding the garden'

ScienceDaily (Dec. 1, 2012) ? The central skill of cancer is its ability to mutate -- that's how it became cancerous in the first place. Once it's started down that path, it's not so difficult for a cancer cell to mutate again and again. This means that different tumors within a single patient or even different areas within the same cancerous deposit may develop different genetic characteristics. This heterogeneity helps cancer escape control by new, targeted cancer therapy drugs.

Two of these targeted drugs are crizotinib and erlotinib -- they do wonders for the patients whose cancers depend on the basic mutations that these drugs exploit. That is, until pockets of the cancer mutate again, pivoting their dependence away from the original, targeted mutation. Due to continuing mutation, the unfortunate reality is that while crizotinib and erlotinib extend patients' lives, the drugs eventually, inevitably, inexorably stop working.

A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published in the December issue of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer's (IASLC) Journal of Thoracic Oncology shows that when pockets of resistant cancer develop, it's often possible to zap these resistant pockets with focused, targeted radiation while continuing crizotinib or erlotinib to maintain control of the majority of the disease that continues to depend on the primary mutation.

"We liken this to weeding the garden," says Andrew Weickhardt, MD, senior clinical fellow at the CU Cancer Center. "In nearly half of patients, when these drugs stop working, they stop working only in a limited number of sites. Given how well these people tolerate the medication, it made sense to us to treat these isolated spots with radiation (or in one case, surgery), and continue the same drug, which was obviously working elsewhere."

This study of 65 patients showed that continuing either crizotinib or erlotinib after the treatment of resistant pockets was associated with more than half a year of additional cancer control.

The benefit was especially robust when the metastatic lung cancer progressed in the brain. The brain is unfortunately a common site of progression because the molecules of crizotinib and erlotinib have difficulty in passing from the bloodstream into the brain, across the so-called blood-brain barrier. Cancer cells sit in the brain as in a robber's cave, hidden away from the drugs.

"We expect using radiation to zap these pockets of cancer in the brain, and then continuing the targeted therapy to become the standard of care," says CU Cancer Center investigator, Ross Camidge, MD, PhD, director of the thoracic oncology clinical program at University of Colorado Hospital.

There was also a smaller but still significant progression-free survival benefit for using this approach in patients whose cancers progressed first outside the brain.

If and when pockets of crizotinib- or erlotinib-resistant lung cancer are detected, "Clinicians should consider using radiation in the body and especially in the brain to weed the garden while continuing the drug, when there is good ongoing control of the cancer in other sites in the body," Weickhardt says.

NKorea says it will launch long-range rocket soon

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korea announced Saturday that it would attempt to launch a long-range rocket in mid-December, a defiant move just eight months after a failed April bid was widely condemned as a violation of a U.N. ban against developing its nuclear and missile programs.

The launch, set for Dec. 10 to 22, is likely to heighten already strained tensions with Washington and Seoul as the United States prepares for Barack Obama's second term as U.S. president and South Korea holds its own presidential election on Dec. 19.

This would be North Korea's second launch attempt under leader Kim Jong Un, who took power following his father Kim Jong Il's death nearly a year ago. The announcement by North Korea's space agency followed speculation overseas about stepped-up activity at North Korea's west coast launch pad captured in satellite imagery.

A spokesman for North Korea's Korean Committee for Space Technology said scientists have "analyzed the mistakes" made in the failed April launch and improved the precision of its Unha rocket and Kwangmyongsong satellite, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

KCNA said the launch was a request of late leader Kim Jong Il, whose Dec. 17, 2011, death North Koreans are expected to mark with some fanfare. The space agency said the rocket would be mounted with a polar-orbiting Earth observation satellite, and maintained its right to develop a peaceful space program.

Washington considers North Korea's rocket launches to be veiled covers for tests of technology for long-range missiles designed to strike the United States, and such tests are banned by the United Nations.

North Korea has capable short- and medium-range missiles, but long-range launches in 1998, 2006, 2009 and in April of this year ended in failure. North Korea is not known to have succeeded in mounting an atomic bomb on a missile but is believed to have enough weaponized plutonium for at least half a dozen bombs, according to U.S. experts, and in 2010 revealed a uranium enrichment program that could provide a second source of material for nuclear weapons.

Six-nation negotiations on dismantling North Korea's nuclear program in exchange for aid fell apart in early 2009.

In Seoul, South Korean officials have accused North Korea of trying to influence its presidential election with what they consider provocations meant to put pressure on voters and on the United States as the North seeks concessions. Conservative Park Geun-hye, the daughter of late President Park Chung-hee, is facing liberal Moon Jae-in in the South Korean presidential vote. Polls show the candidates in a close race.

Some analysts, however, question whether North Korean scientists have corrected whatever caused the misfire of its last rocket.

"Preparing for a launch less than a year after a failure calls into question whether the North could have analyzed and fixed whatever went wrong," David Wright, a physicist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, wrote on the organization's website this week.

The United States has criticized North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles as a threat to Asian and world security. In 2009, North Korea conducted rocket and nuclear tests within months of Obama taking office.

North Korea under its young leader has pledged to bolster its nuclear arsenal unless Washington scraps what the North calls a "hostile" policy. North Korea maintains that it is building bombs to defend itself against what it sees as a U.S. nuclear threat in the region.

This year is the centennial of the birth of national founder Kim Il Sung, the grandfather of Kim Jong Un. According to North Korean propaganda, 2012 is meant to put the North on a path toward a "strong, prosperous and great nation."

"North Korea appears to be under pressure to redeem its April launch failure before the year of the 'strong, prosperous and great nation' ends," said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Dongguk University in Seoul.

He added that a successful rocket launch would raise North Korea's bargaining power with South Korea and the United States "because it means the country is closer to developing missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads."

Before its last two rocket launches, North Korea notified the International Civil Aviation Organization and the International Maritime Organization about its intentions to launch. IMO spokeswoman Natasha Brown said that as of Friday the organization had not been notified by North Korea.

The North's announcement comes two days after South Korea canceled what would have been the launch of its first satellite from its own territory. Scientists in Seoul cited technical difficulties. South Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the North's planned launch is "a grave provocation and a head-on challenge to the international community."

North Korea's missile and nuclear programs will be a challenge for Obama in his second term and for the incoming South Korean leader. Washington's most recent attempt to negotiate a freeze of the North's nuclear program and a test moratorium in exchange for food aid collapsed with the April launch.

In Japan, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said he would coordinate with the U.S., South Korea, China and Russia in strongly urging the North to refrain from the rocket launch.

The Korean Peninsula remains in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. Washington stations nearly 30,000 troops in South Korea as a buttress against any North Korean aggression. Tens of thousands more are in nearby Japan.
