Dragon cleared its first major hurdle of the day Friday when station flight engineer Don Petitt, the mission's grappler-in-chief, captured the Dragon capsule with the station's robotic arm as the craft free-floated some 30 feet from the docking port.

?Houston? Station. Looks like we've got us a dragon by the tail,? Dr. Petitt said as NASA's mission control confirmed that the arm's grip was solid.

Without skipping a beat, he deadpanned, ?We're thinking this sim[ulation] went really well. We're ready to turn it around and do it for real,? as applause and hugs broke out in two control rooms ? NASA's and SpaceX's at the company's Hawthorne, Calif., headquarters.

Until its conclusion on May 31, the mission remains a test flight ? combining into one mission the objectives initially planned for two launches this year. But its?success so far signals that a company NASA has helped nurture can perform the difficult feat of lofting a craft capable of catching up with another spacecraft traveling at faster-than-bullet speeds, matching its pace, and safely docking with it ? something no other privately-operated spacecraft has done.

Indeed, Dragon was not merely carrying a demonstration payload of roughly 1,000 pounds of food, clothing, and other items to the space station. It was carrying the hopes of a US commercial spaceflight industry aiming to build a thriving space-transportation sector in much the same way fledgling air carriers emerged during the early decades of the 20th Century to build a thriving commercial air-transportation industry.

Over the years, NASA officials have spoken of the ?firsts? the US space program has accomplished, said Michael Suffredini, space-station program manager at NASA, at a news briefing Friday afternoon.

?This rates right at the top,? he said of the partnership between NASA and SpaceX. NASA established requirements SpaceX had to meet operating near the space station. Beyond those requirements, he said, ?a contractor relatively independent of NASA designed on its own a spacecraft, [then] completely built and tested and flew this spacecraft in a manner that has been remarkable.?

A space-station workout

The rendezvous and docking Friday gave participating space-station crew members a workout.

Although the process of grappling and berthing may look fairly simple, it isn't, notes astronaut Catherine Coleman, who grappled Japan's cargo craft, known by its acronym HTV, on its second supply mission to the station in January 2011. She likens it to trying to pass something from one car to another ? when both are traveling at interstate speeds.

On orbit, it's a Grey Poupon moment at 17,500 miles an hour.

?This is truly a momentous accomplishment for SpaceX and for the industry,? said former astronaut and space-station commander Michael Lopez-Alegria, now president of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation in Washington, in a prepared statement.

The Telegraph. London 2012. Full interactive guide to all the events at the 2012 Olympic Games

Tribute by Philip Barker
Don Anthony, a finalist in the hammer at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and in recent times a stalwart member of the Sports Journalists? Association, has died after a long illness. He was 83.

Don Anthony, having collected one of many awards in his distinguished career as administrator and historian of Olympic sport

Born in November 1928, Anthony had an accomplished sporting career. After winning the AAA hammer title in 1953, he twice represented England in what was then the British Empire and Commonwealth Games, in 1954 and 1958, as well as finishing 12th at the Melbourne Games.

Dr Don Anthony made his mark as an administrator, educator and sporting pioneer.

It was in the midst of his hammer career, while on National Service in Cyprus in 1955, that Anthony first played the game of volleyball and, on his return home to a job as an assistant lecturer at Manchester University that he established a governing body for the sport in this country ? the beginnings of a lifelong mission which will see some fulfillment in a few weeks? time with British teams competing at the London Olympic Games.

He represented volleyball on the national Olympic committee for many years and to this day, Volleyball England?s Hall of Fame bears his name.

As a young man, he was one of the first British students to visit what is now the German Sports University in Cologne. He taught at Loughborough and many other institutions and his last academic assignment was as Visiting Professor of the University of the Eastern Mediterranean.

His work outside the formal classroom was just as important. He travelled the world to promote peace and Olympism through UNESCO and Olympic Solidarity. He was a familiar face at the International Olympic Academy in Greece and oversaw the establishment of Britain?s own National Olympic Academy in 1982.

He became great friends with Philip Noel-Baker, a fellow Olympian who won the Nobel Peace Prize. They shared the same ideals, and Anthony was the natural choice as Noel-Baker?s biographer. The book was appropriately entitled Man of Sport, Man of Peace.

As a journalist, Anthony was a regular contributor to World Sports Magazine and to the Olympic Review. He was responsible for uncovering much of Britain?s early Olympic heritage and also ensured that William Penny Brookes? Olympian Games in Much Wenlock received their rightful place in the history of the modern Games. In 1994, Anthonywelcomed Juan Antonio Samaranch to Much Wenlock to mark the centenary of the IOC.

More recently, Anthony worked closely with Baron Pierre de Coubertin?s great nephew, Antoine de Navacelle, in the establishment of the Coubertin awards which combined sport with the world of business ethics.

In 2007, Anthony received the IOC award for ?Sport and Promotion of Olympism.?

Last year, Anthony was made an MBE, when the Queen, patron of the BOA, herself performed the investiture.

Children's Health & Fitness ? Obesity Is More Than Just Being Fat

May 30th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From the Examiner?..

Because of people like Jamie Oliver and Food Nation, Joe Cross and Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, and the young people of ReThinkers, there is, thank GOD more and more attention being directed towards childhood obesity in America.

Finding healthy alternatives to processed and fast food is a lot easier and a lot less expensive then it was 5 or 10 years ago. Joining a fitness center or exercise program was not only expensive it was inconvenient to a lot of working families and the programs were not intended to support entire families. Now local playgrounds have programs for families, and communities have walking and biking trails, as well as shopping malls that open early for those who like to walk and window shop.

The health care crisis in America?s has gotten way out of control and is forcing lawmakers and health care professionals to look at obesity and the affects it is having on the family dynamic. Weight of the Nation says, that ?childhood obesity is much more than a cosmetic concern. The health consequences of childhood obesity include greater risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and other serious illnesses. The combination of these health effects and the dramatic increase in childhood obesity rates over the past three decades causes some experts to fear this may be the first generation of American children who will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.?

Improving taxpayers' services | Manipur Mail

Shamima Siddiqui
PIB Features
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Ministry of Finance has taken the following numerous initiatives to improve taxpayers? services:
E-filing of Income Tax returns/E-payment of Taxes ? The e-filing of income tax returns, e-payment of taxes, ECS facility for electronic clearing of refunds directly in taxpayers? bank accounts and electronic filing of TDS returns are now available throughout the country. These measures have empowered taxpayers to meet their tax obligations without visiting an income tax office. During the financial year 2011-2012, the number of e-returns filed was 1.63 crores.
A new e-filing portal has been conceptualised by the Department in order to take the e-filing to next generation of e-services by including e-filing of all 92 Forms including ITRs and other web enabled services. The New e-filing project will release more resources in the department to focus on post processing work. This would significantly aid in tackling tax evasion and curbing black economy. Proper data quality due to increased e-filing will help efficient mining and risk profiling and thus substantially increase number of tax payers.
The proposed E-filing contract has a taxpayer ? centric design to provide services matching the best international practices, which would not only lower the compliance cost for the taxpayer, but dramatically improve the public image of the Department.
Refund Banker Scheme ? Presently Refund Banker Scheme is in operation for all non-corporate charges in India. The Scheme envisages issue of refunds to the taxpayers by the Refund Banker both through paper cheques as well as through ECS. During the financial year 2011-2012, almost 95% of total number of refunds have been issued through this Scheme.
Centralised Processing Centres ? The Centralised Processing Centre at Bengaluru that was inaugurated during last year has stablised and is processing about 1 lakh returns daily.
A Centralised Processing Centre (TDS) is being set up at Ghaziabad and is expected to be made functional during the year. The CPC (TDS) would mark a major step in ensuring TDS compliance through processing of TDS statements with a focus on usage of technology driven end to end processes. Its main objective is to eliminate the TDS mismatch cases which are presently a matter of concern for the taxpayers in the proper claim of TDS credits.
The assessing officers will have access to MIS reports and Analytics in respect of the TDS defaults in TDS statements processed by CPC(TDS). It will enable robust TDS administration with a focus on compliance functions by the assessing officers in identified cases. Business Intelligence tools will be in place to provide vital inputs in framing TDS policy.
CPC(TDS) will be the backbone of CPC, Bengaluru where more than one crore Income Tax Returns are poised to be processed and wherein it is not possible to claim credits of tax deducted/collected on the strength of physical TDS certificates. It will enable faster processing of Income Tax returns and issuance of speedy refunds.
In short, CPC(TDS) will provide e-services with a focus on Deductors, Taxpayers and the Departmental Officers.
Aayakar Seva Kendras ? The CBDT has aimed to redress all public grievances within a period of two months from its receipt. Aayakar Seva Kendra is a Single Window System for computerized registration of all taxpayers? applications including the facility for filing paper income tax return. More than 50 Aayakar Seva Kendras are already functional and it is expected that more number of such Aayakar Seva Kendras shall be made operational during the year.
National Call Centre and Regional Call Centres ? Another important initiative undertaken by the Department is the setting up of a robust National Call Centre at Gurgaon and Four Regional Call Centres at Jammu, Shillong, Jangipur and Kochi. At present, National Call Centre at Gurgaon as well as all the four Regional Call Centres are functioning.
The selection of scrutiny cases is being done through CASS. This reduces the discretion of assessing officers in scrutiny selection.
The taxpayers have been provided the facility of on- line Tax Credit Verification Statement (Form 26 AS).

Super-sensitive tests could detect diseases earlier

ScienceDaily (May 27, 2012) ? Scientists have developed an ultra-sensitive test that should enable them to detect signs of a disease in its earliest stages, in research published May 27in the journal Nature Materials.

The scientists, from Imperial College London and the University of Vigo, have created a test to detect particular molecules that indicate the presence of disease, even when these are in very low concentrations. There are already tests available for some diseases that look for such biomarkers using biological sensors or 'biosensors'. However, existing biosensors become less sensitive and predictable at detecting biomarkers when they are in very low concentrations, as occurs when a disease is in its early stages.

In the new study, the researchers demonstrated that the new biosensor test can find a biomarker associated with prostate cancer, called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). However, the team say that the biosensor can be easily reconfigured to test for other diseases or viruses where the related biomarker is known.

Professor Molly Stevens, senior author of the study from the Departments of Materials and Bioengineering at Imperial College London, said: "It is vital to detect diseases at an early stage if we want people to have the best possible outcomes -- diseases are usually easier to treat at this stage, and early diagnosis can give us the chance to halt a disease before symptoms worsen. However, for many diseases, using current technology to look for early signs of disease can be like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. Our new test can actually find that needle. We only looked at the biomarker for one disease in this study, but we're confident that the test can be adapted to identify many other diseases at an early stage."

The team demonstrated the effectiveness of their biosensor by testing PSA biomarker samples in solutions containing a complex mixture of blood derived serum proteins. Monitoring the levels of PSA at ultralow concentrations can be crucial in the early diagnosis of the reoccurrence of prostate cancer, but classic detection approaches are not sensitive enough to carry out this analysis with a high degree of accuracy. The new test could enable more reliable diagnosis, but more research will need to be done to further explore its potential.

In their study, the team detected PSA at 0.000000000000000001 grams per millilitre, which is at the limits of current biosensor performance. By comparison, an existing test called an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) test can detect PSA at 0.000000001 grams per millilitre, which is nine orders of magnitude more concentrated.

The biosensors used in the new study consist of nanoscopic-sized gold stars floating in a solution containing other blood derived proteins. Attached to the surface of these gold stars are antibodies, which latch onto PSA when they detect it in a sample. A secondary antibody, which has an enzyme called glucose oxidase attached to it, recognises the PSA and creates a distinctive silver crystal coating on the gold stars, which is more apparent when the PSA biomarkers are in low concentrations. This silver coating acts like a signal that PSA is present, and it can be easily detected by scientists using optical microscopes.

The next stage of the research will see the team carrying out further clinical testing to assess the efficacy of the biosensor in detecting a range of different biomarkers associated with conditions such as HIV and other infections. They will also explore ways of commercialising their product.

This research was funded by the European Research Council and via a Marie Curie fellowship.

What's an American Indian? Warren case stirs query

Native Americans have a high rate of intermarriage with other groups. Many are not identifiable by appearance, which has made it possible for almost anyone to assume a Native persona. That seems to have been the case with US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren.

What, exactly, makes someone American Indian? Even Indians themselves don't agree as they debate the case of Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren, whose disputed claim of Native American identity is shining a rare spotlight on the malleable nature of Indian heritage and the long history of murky claims to such ancestry.

Warren, a Harvard Law School professor and Democrat who is running in Massachusetts against Republican incumbent Sen. Scott Brown, was listed as Native American in several law school directories. Warren has said that her "family lore" described Indian ancestors, and the New England Genealogy Association said it found indications ? but not proof ? that Warren had a Cherokee great-great-great grandmother, which would make her 1/32 Indian.

"I'm proud of my heritage," Warren said Thursday. Asked how she knew it included Native Americans, she replied, "Because my mother told me so."

Her opponents question whether Warren chose this heritage to gain advantages available to Indians and other underrepresented groups in academia.

"Warren has zero evidence that she is at all Native American," said Brown's campaign manager, Jim Barnett. The genealogy association acknowledges that it found only secondary references to Cherokee family members, not primary sources such as marriage, birth or census records.

Among Native Americans, the varying opinions demonstrate that Indian identity is subjective even among Indians themselves.

When David Eugene Wilkins first saw Warren interviewed during her nomination to a federal post, he was smitten by her intelligence and politics. But when he heard about her claims of Indian ancestry, "I shook my head and said, 'Oh no.'"

"For us it was always about allegiance rather than biology or ancestry," said Wilkins, an enrolled member of the Lumbee tribe and professor of American Indian studies at the University of Minnesota.

"It's where you place your political, cultural, emotional allegiance. She lived her entire life and never had any association whatsoever with any community. So something doesn't wash for me," Wilkins said.

But David Treuer, an award-winning writer and Ojibwe Indian from Leech Lake Reservation in Minnesota, said there is a difference between Indian identity and ancestry ? you can have one without the other.

"An Indian identity is something someone claims for oneself; it is a matter of choice," Treuer wrote in a Washington Post essay titled, "Elizabeth Warren says she's Native American. So she is."

WeDoRecover Expands Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centre Network with a New Partner Rehab Centre in Durban, South Africa That Will Focus on Upmarket South African and UK, English Patients

????JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, May 27, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- WeDoRecover was started in 2009 by an internationally accredited addiction counsellor who had run treatment centres in Johannesburg, South Africa and Manchester, England and recognised the need for families of patients to have an independent resource to use as a rehab directory that could guide them in the pre-admission crisis phase while making rehabilitaion centre choices.

Having performed over 100 successful addiction interventions and working with the best rehab centres in the UK, South Africa and Thailand the next logical step seemed to be offering addiction advice to friends and family of addicted people, helping patients to made educated choices about the best centre for them.

WeDoRecover provides a platform where family members who want to help their alcohol and drug addicted loved ones recover can call and get guidance from professional and qualified addiction counsellors.

WeDoRecover offers cost effective treatment centres and alcohol detoxification clinics bested suited to your circumstances and financial needs in all of South Africa's major cities (Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban) as well the UK (London, Manchester and other English towns) as well as Thailand rehab centres.

WeDoRecover's lead addictions counsellor, Gareth Carter says that it is vital that everyone has access to quality addiction treatment, regardless of where they are. "With South Africa having twice the world norm for alcohol and drug abuse, it's clear that our services are much needed."

"There are hundreds and thousands of people that need treatment and we would like to ensure that they are given the opportunity to recover from their respective addictions," said Carter.

The website, WeDoRecover.com, provides people with information regarding all types of drug and alcohol addictions and what can be done to treat it.

It also provides in depth articles and descriptions of the various available treatment centres and the processes involved in effective addiction rehabilitation.

Carter said that finding the correct rehabilitation centre is key in the path to a successful addiction recovery. "Because everyone is different, their addiction symptoms and treatment history, risk factors and funding available will differ, therefore picking the correct treatment centre can be tricky for the uninformed."

"There are a vast majority of treatments available to people struggling with drug and alcohol abuse and addiction, so that's where we step in and can provide fast, tangible solutions for the patient and their family."

Carter also added that they can provide answers to any questions people might have. "People want to know what makes this clinic good, what the success rates of each clinic is, how are the facilities like, can I afford it? WeDoRecover can answer all those questions and will ensure that you or your loved one receives the most helpful treatment available to your needs, your addiction, your budget, your age and other risk factors," said Carter.

The effects that alcohol and drug addiction have on society, especially in South Africa is far reaching. Addictions do not only affect the individual physically, but also the people around them.

"Alcohol and drug addiction can damage your career ambitions and most importantly, it affects the relationships you have with the people you love," said Carter.

Carter also said that many addiction treatment myths abound, that families and loved ones can also inadvertently enable their loved ones addiction by keeping it under wraps through being afraid of what the consequences might be if others found out. "If you know that your loved one has an addiction and do nothing but maintain the status quo, you are enabling their addiction. Your loved one has no reason to change their behaviour until you change yours. Drug and alcohol addicted patients rarely take responsibility for their recovery without external pressure forcing them to do so."

He also said that there are many ordinary citizens and several celebrities too that have made use of strong exchange rates to avail themselves of world class addiction treatment at more affordable prices than they find in their home countries (England, UK, Europe, America and the Middle East - Kuwait, Dubai UAE, Saudi Arabia) by accessing rehab centres in South Africa & Thailand.

"It certainly makes sense in this economy to travel abroad to a addiction rehabilitation centre that meets internationally accepted standards and pay less than you would at home. Of course the after-care plan and longer term recovery strategy is paramount to successful treatment."

Trumbull shocks undefeated Greenwich to win FCIAC baseball crown

BRIDGEPORT -- The Trumbull baseball team played all year in memory of former coach Jerry McDougall, who died in October, and the Eagles had to feel like the old coach was looking over them this week.

Trumbull completed a stellar run through the end of the regular season and playoffs, capping it off with a 7-1 win over previously undefeated Greenwich Saturday in the FCIAC championship at Harbor Yard.

"We dedicated our season to Coach McDougall and no doubt about it, he was our guardian angel today," Trumbull coach Phil Pacelli said. "These last three weeks just to get in, it has been a magical ride and to cap it off today with a storybook ending is sweet."

Pitchers Mike Yerina and Colin Keyes were co-MVPs, as Trumbull won the title for the first time since 2005, combining in the final game to shut the Cardinals down.

Keyes pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits to pick up the win, and Yerina came in on three days rest and closed the door, striking out four over the final three innings.

"It is the best feeling in the world," Yerina said. "We have been working hard all season and it finally paid off. The first two games we won by one run. Our defense did a hell of a job and our pitching was great. We made the simple plays and that is what brought us here today."

The Eagles allowed a mind-boggling one run over 25 innings in the tournament.

For Greenwich it was the end of a magical run that saw them win 22 straight before the wheels came off in the championship game with the Cardinals uncharacteristically making three errors and allowing two runs on passed balls.

It was the little things that won Greenwich so many games and it was the little things that cost them in the end.

"It was a tough game and Trumbull is a very good team," Greenwich coach Mike Mora said. "They got ahead and with their pitching it was very hard to come back. We were scrambling to get some guys in on short rest and, that's baseball."

Trumbull got on the board right away, scoring twice in the first on a passed ball that let Brendan Moore score and then on a groundout by Will Velez that plated Casey Mack.

The Eagles added two more unearned runs in the third on back-to-back errors in the infield for Greenwich that allowed James DelNomme and Velez to score, chasing Greenwich starter Dylan Callahan from the game in the process.

The Cardinals got one back in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Casey Gaynor, scoring David Berdoff.

Greenwich's Kyle Ballone led off the fifth with a single that knocked Keyes out of the game and Nick Bancroft bunted for a hit off Yerina, but the senior hurler got Callahan to pop out and struck out Berdoff to escape with no runs scoring.

Trumbull made it official in the sixth, scoring three more runs on RBI hits from Moore and Mack to make it 7-1.

Greenwich's pitching depth was put to the test after the semifinal game against McMahon had to be continued a day later, meaning the Cardinals had to run Ryan Marks out to complete the semifinal game.

Greenwich used four pitchers in the championship, all of whom threw multiple innings over the four straight days they had to play.

"The way Dylan had been throwing I was trying to get two or three out of him," Mora said. "It wasn't due to hits really, we walked a couple guys and kicked the ball around, uncharacteristic of us and we know how we have to play. We have to play good defense, throw strikes and today we didn't."

Trumbull was playing for the memory of McDougall but also had a chip on its shoulder all year after getting what it felt was a lack of respect in the preseason.

"It really motivated our kids when in the preseason articles and stuff you literally could not find one word about any of our players or anything about our team at all," Pacelli said. "That makes it even more fulfilling."

Individuals are a Part of Making an Effective, Self-Organized Team ...

In my last post, I took a stab at answering the question ?How do we change from individuals in workgroups to effect, self-organizing teams?? Through my discovery and reflection on that topic, I turned my focus towards the environment of the team. Now we know that environment is a big part, but the individuals do have an impact and over the years I?ve found some ideas that really impact how we as individuals can ensure we help the team become an effective, self-organized team.

  • Respect. It goes without saying that team members need to exhibit respect towards one-another. The idea of respect is often woven into an organization?s core values; however, it takes self-discipline to be sure we are treating each other with respect. It is sometimes said that at the end of an argument and or discussion, it is OK to agree-to-disagree as long as we all respect each other afterwards. Well, I would say ? show respect during the time of the argument and or discussion. If you do, you?ll often find a faster resolution and you?ll avoid that ?uncomfortable?, ?bad taste in mouth? after effect.
  • Embrace Diversity. It is often not fully appreciated to have a team made up of members from different backgrounds, but in my experience ? this is when the best results appear. Diversity can be demographic related or experience related, in all cases it simply comes back to learning. By listening to each other and sharing ideas, we learn from each other and inevitably, produce better and enjoy producing. One other by-product of leveraging cross-functional product teams, is of course diversity. The diversity of skill sets swarming on delivering a story helps do so faster with higher value and higher quality.
  • Trust. Trust is earned. It is primarily earned by doing what we say were going to do when we said we are going to do it. This is a huge challenge and we need to understand as individuals working in a team that a commitment you make reflects upon the team. Therefore, when we commit to completing work during an iteration and deliver on this commitment, we are establishing trust with the business. During our daily stand ups, when we are actionable about what we finished and what we plan to finish, we establish trust in the team.
  • Focus on Strengths. Much like embracing diversity, we must focus on the strengths of the team members and put each other in a position to succeed. We all-too-often look to improve our weaknesses either by taking on tasks that will force us to learn. Well there?s a difference between improving our skills and experiences, versus improving our weaknesses. A couple years ago, I wrote about how my team used Strengths Finder to better understand where each team member play?s best. From this point, we would define and divvy up work to get the iteration delivered based on our strengths. This became a very natural approach and team members had each other?s back when someone was playing outside their wheelhouse.
  • DO. I have often used the phrase ? have a ?will do attitude.? One of the best way of having teams form and self-organize is simply by doing. Do have the hard discussions. Do spend time with each other beyond work ? build teams. Do swarm. Do pair. Do work hard. Do have each other?s back. Do adjust when necessary. Do make a difference. Do encourage each other. Do make decisions. Do what you said your going to do. Do appreciate each other?s opinions. Do lead. Do follow. Do take time to reflect. Do step away when necessary.

Team WorkThese ideas and concepts are definitely not mind blowing, nor are they new. But, as I mentioned, these are the basics that I?ve seen work. What are some of the individual behaviors and or practices have you?ve seen or done that helped ensure your team self-organizes?

(AP) ? The private company SpaceX made history Friday with the docking of its Dragon capsule to the International Space Station, the most impressive feat yet in turning routine spaceflight over to the commercial sector.

It marked the first time a business enterprise delivered a supply ship to the space station.

"There's so much that could have gone wrong and it went right," said an elated Elon Musk, the young, driven billionaire behind SpaceX.

"This really is, I think, going to be recognized as a significantly historical step forward in space travel ? and hopefully the first of many to come."

SpaceX still has to get its Dragon back next week with a load of science gear; the retro bell-shaped capsule is designed to splash down into the ocean, in the style of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. But Friday was the crucial step, Musk noted, and NASA agreed the next SpaceX mission could come as early as September.

After a three-day flight from Cape Canaveral, the Dragon closed in on the space station as two control centers ? NASA in Houston and SpaceX in Hawthorne, Calif. ? worked in tandem. A problem with the capsule laser-tracking system prompted SpaceX controllers to order a temporary retreat, but the problem quickly was resolved.

NASA astronaut Donald Pettit used the space station's 58-foot robot arm to snare the gleaming white Dragon as the two craft soared 250 miles above Australia, a day after a practice fly-by.

"Looks like we've got us a dragon by the tail," Pettit announced once he locked onto Dragon's docking mechanism.

NASA's dressed-up controllers applauded. In contrast, their SpaceX counterparts ? including Musk ? lifted their arms in triumph and jumped out of their seats to exchange high fives.

The company's youthful-looking employees ? the average age is 30 ? were still in a frenzy when Musk took part in a televised news conference a couple hours later. They screamed with excitement as if it were a pep rally and chanted, "E-lon, E-lon, E-lon," as the 40-year-old Musk, wearing a black athletic jacket with the SpaceX logo, described the day's events.

Alcohol was banned from the premises during the crucial flight operation, Musk noted, "but now that things are good, I think we'll probably have a bit of champagne and have some fun." The crowd roared in approval.

Although cargo hauls have become routine, Friday's linkup was significant in that an individual company pulled it off. That chore was previously reserved for a small, elite group of government agencies.

Not only that, the reusable SpaceX Dragon is designed to safely return items, a huge benefit that disappeared with NASA's space shuttles. It is the first U.S. craft to visit the station since the final shuttle flight last summer.

"I think you know it, but you made history today," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden told the space station astronauts and everyone else involved in Friday's docking. "It was an effort that will revolutionize the way we carry out space exploration."

NASA provided seed money for SpaceX ? $381 million going into Tuesday's launch, a small portion of the more than $1 billion that the company has invested in the effort.

Two hours after the capture, the crew attached the Dragon to the space station as the congratulations poured in.

"Everyone who is working to push forward the space frontier recognizes that such a mission is a massive challenge, and I join the world in lauding this important accomplishment," said Richard Branson of Virgin Galactic, a space tourism company that is holding a seat for Musk aboard its SpaceShipTwo.

"Nearly 43 years after we first walked on the moon, we have taken another step in demonstrating continued American leadership in space," said Apollo 11's Buzz Aldrin, the second man to step onto the moon.

The capsule? 19 feet tall and 12 feet across ? is carrying 1,000 pounds of supplies on this unprecedented test flight. The crew starts unpacking Saturday and will have just under a week to unload the food, clothes and other contents.

After this test flight, SpaceX ? officially known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? has a contract to make a dozen delivery runs. It is one of several companies vying for NASA's cargo business and a chance to launch Americans from U.S. soil.

Rival Orbital Sciences Corp. is shooting for its own supply run by year's end.

President Barack Obama is pushing commercial ventures in orbit so NASA can concentrate on grander destinations like asteroids and Mars. Obama's chief scientific adviser, John Holdren, called Friday's linkup "an achievement of historic scientific and technological significance."

"It's essential we maintain such competition and fully support this burgeoning and capable industry to get U.S. astronauts back on American launch vehicles as soon as possible," Holdren said in a statement.

Without the shuttle, NASA astronauts must go through Russia, an expensive and embarrassing situation for the U.S. after a half-century of orbital self-sufficiency. Once companies master supply runs, they hope to tackle astronaut ferry runs.

Musk, who founded SpaceX a decade ago and helped create PayPal, said he can have astronauts riding his Dragon capsules to orbit in three or four years. He also runs the electric car company Tesla Motors.

The space station has been relying on Russian, Japanese and European cargo ships for supplies ever since the shuttles retired. None of those, however, can bring anything of value back; they're simply loaded with trash and burn up in the atmosphere.

The space station's six-man crew will release the Dragon on Thursday after filling it with science experiments and equipment. It will aim for the Pacific Ocean just off the California coast.

"At the beginning of the launch, I said there were a thousand things that had to go right," said Alan Lindenmoyer, manager of NASA's commercial crew and cargo program. "Well, there still are several hundred left. But I am very confident we'll get through it. ... Today this really is the beginning of a new era in commercial spaceflight"

Video: Scientists start explaining Fat Bastard's vicious cycle

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Fat Bastard's revelation "I eat because I'm depressed and I'm depressed because I eat" in the Austin Powers film series may be explained by sophisticated neuroscience research being undertaken by scientists affiliated with the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre (CR-CHUM) and the university's Faculty of Medicine. "In addition to causing obesity, rich foods can actually cause chemical reactions in the brain in a similar way to illicit drugs, ultimately leading to depression as the 'come-downs' take their toll," explain lead researcher, Dr. Stephanie Fulton. As is the case with drug addicts, a vicious cycle sets in where "food-highs" are used as a way to combat depression. "Data shows that obesity is associated with increased risk of developing depression, but we have very little understanding of the neural mechanisms and brain reward patterns that link the two," Fulton said. "We are demonstrating for the first time that the chronic consumption of palatable, high-fat diets has pro-depressive effects."

A molecule in the brain known as dopamine enables the brain to rewards us with good feelings, encouraging us to learn certain kinds of behaviour. This chemical is the same in humans as it is in mice and other animals. The research team feed mice different kinds of food and monitored how the diet affects the way the animals behave. Fulton and her colleagues use a variety of scientifically validated techniques to evaluate the relationship between rewarding mice with food and their resulting behaviour and emotions. The team is also contributing to the improvement of these techniques, such as the one demonstrated in the video. Later, the team actually looks at the brains of the mice to see how they have changed.

Mice that have been fed a higher-fat diet exhibit signs of being anxious, such as an avoidance of open areas, and of being depressed, such as making less of an effort to escape when trapped. Moreover, their brains have been physically altered by their experiences. For example, CREB is a molecule that controls the activation of genes involved in the functioning of our brains and is well known for its contribution to memory formation. CREB is much more activated in the brains of higher-fat diet mice. Finally, these mice have higher levels of corticosterone, a hormone that is associated with stress.

Stephanie Fulton of Universit? de Montr?al and its affiliated research hospital studies the behavior of mice and their brain chemistry to reveal how humans may act in similar circumstances.Credit: Sharma, S., Hryhorczuk, C., Fulton, S. Fulton and her team are part of a research network that is working together to address the biological reasons for obesity and its related diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, and of course depression. She is based at the Montreal Diabetes Centre, an institution associated with the CHUM and four Montreal universities that brings together facilities for clinical research, cell biology and microscopy research, and rodent physiology research, such as that involved in the depression study. "Although popular culture jokes about these illnesses and even mocks the people who are suffering, obesity is a serious and major public health issue that already affects hundreds of millions of people. As a society, we must avoid creating stigma and discriminating against obese and depressed people," Fulton said. "With regards to research, it is urgent that we identify the molecules and neural pathways involved in obesity and obesity-related illnesses. My colleagues and I are committed to identifying the brain circuitry involved in these diseases and to improving the tools available to researchers working in the same field."
