North Face hosts Bonedale SK8-Revival

The Carbondale Recreation Department produced the Bonedale SK8-Revival skateboard contest at the North Face skate park in Carbondale last weekend.

The competition was the first on the new skate park edition completed last fall by the Evergreen Skateparks company. The new addition garnered an award from the Colorado Coalition for Public Skateparks (CCPS) as one of the best Colorado skate parks of 2011 under 10,000 square feet.

The reasoning behind CCPS's award were as follows: the park addition was constructed using poured-in-place concrete, skateboarder involvement throughout the process, a variety of skate features and quality of design and construction.

The town's skateboard instructor, Chris Johnson, helped to make the project happen with a grassroots local fundraising campaign and was successful in raising $1,400, which was used to leverage local town dollars and Great Outdoors Colorado grant dollars to construct the park.

Carbondale was only able to financially afford a beginner skatepark in the 3,000 square foot range, as it had appropriated $60,000 in funding for the project. The size of the beginner skatepark grew to 4,664 square feet when a local concrete supplier, Casey Concrete, discounted the concrete for the project by 50 percent. The project engineer, Schmueser-Gordon-Meyer, also provided engineering services to the town at no cost.

Johnson was excited about offering a contest to showcase the new park, so the Bonedale Sk8-Revival was born. Many of Johnson's students participated in the competition showing off tricks they had learned and mastered just days before in his class.

Carbondale offers skateboarding lessons throughout the summer and into the fall. Session 2 begins July 10, and pre-registration is required. Visit www.carbondalerec.com to sign up.

For more information, contact the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center front desk at 510-1292.

Don't dismiss the Nexus Q just yet ? it has potential

1 day

When Google announced the Nexus Q, an Android-powered "social streaming device," most people scoffed. It has a silly label ??what is social streaming anyway? ??and a startling $299 price tag. But don't write the ball-shaped?gadget off just yet,?because it has the guts and soul to roll its way into your home.

During the Google I/O conference in San Francisco, I?spent a lot of time chatting with folks about the Nexus Q. It's been referred to as everything from a "ball of awesomeness" ??by a Google employee's son?? to a "polished turd."

The price tag's what riled people up most, of course. Why spend $300 on the Nexus Q when you can buy an Apple TV for $99?

"Because it's got all the potential in the world," I theorized, while discussing the device with a former Apple developer. Don't get me wrong, I learned long ago that the true?potential of anything is rarely ever met, but Google's nudging the Nexus Q along in the right ways.

Right now you can only access media through Google Play (formerly the?Android Market) and YouTube on the Nexus Q, but that'll easily change in the future. Google's made sure that the Nexus Q is as?open as possible to developers (and even plans on setting up forums to encourage them). There could soon be all sorts of apps, hacks and tricks for the Android-powered device.

If software enhancements aren't sufficient, then you should keep in mind that the Nexus Q has a micro USB port which could be used for third-party accessories.

You see where I'm going with this? The Nexus Q offers 16GB of on-board storage, NFC support, can be expanded using the micro USB slot, is as open as the 24-hour diner down the street, and can double as a weapon. (This thing's surprisingly heavy.)

It might take a generation or two for the surface of the Nexus Q's potential to be truly scratched, but once it is, Apple TV and other similar devices are in trouble.

The Nexus Q can be pre-ordered now. It will start shipping in mid-July.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Louie, Season 3

It?s funny, Allison, that you and I had such different takes on the caf? scene?you saw a master manipulator, pulling strings and letting April do all the dirty work for him, whereas I saw, at best, a passive-aggressive, weak-spined bumbler retreating awkwardly from confrontation. Maybe you?re right, but while I credit C.K. himself?the guy who wrote the script and directed the episode, that is?with that level of control and savvy, I don?t tend to credit onscreen Louie with it. It?s hard to suss out precise differences between creator and character when so much of their biographies and personality traits blur, but the latter seems, pretty consistently, a notch or two less formidable than the former, in the intelligence department and elsewhere.

Time for the House to Move on the Farm Bill - The Ferguson Group ...

Last week, the Senate passed the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012, S. 3240, by a vote of 64-35 after voting on nearly 70 amendments. Of particular interest to local governments, the bill reauthorizes various broadband programs - the Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant program is reauthorized with no changes, and the Broadband Access Program is changed substantially to the benefit of local governments. It provides a grant and loan component ? similar to the stimulus broadband programs ? unlike the previous Farm Bill program that relied solely on loans for broadband expansion. Local governments are eligible loan and grant recipients and all applicants are required to collaborate with their units of local government (if the applicant is not the local government, but a private entity).

The rural business programs are reorganized: the Rural Business Opportunity Grant program and Rural Business Enterprise Grant programs are consolidated into the Rural Business Development Grants program.

The conservation title of the bill was cut by $6.44 billion, largely by reducing the Conservation Reserve Program and consolidating 23 existing programs into 13. The bill combines the easement authorities of the Wetlands Reserve Program, Grasslands Reserve Program, and Farmland Protection Program into a new Agricultural Conservation Easement Program in which local governments will still be eligible to preserve working agricultural lands.

Finally, the bill includes an amendment introduced by Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) that reinstates $150 million in mandatory funding to rural development and beginning farmer/rancher programs. The bill passed by the Senate Agriculture Committee did not include mandatory funding for any programs in the rural development title, but the final Senate-passed bill includes funds for the water/wastewater backlog, two rural development business programs, and additional funds for the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program.

Action on the Farm Bill now turns to the House, where the House Agriculture Committee is scheduled to mark up its version of the bill on July 11.

Jim Cramer says, ?Contrarian Investing? Forget About It?

by Jason Jenkins, Investment U Research
Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Jim Cramer says, ?Contrarian Investing? Forget About It?

Contrary to Cramer's belief, contrarian investing works. Just ask the likes of Warren Buffet, George Soros, John Templeton, David Dreman, and Jim Rogers.

A couple of weeks ago Mad Money host Jim Cramer made the above declaration regarding contrarian investing. He went on to say, ?I think it?s wrong. I think it doesn?t matter? I think it?s really a treacherous way to invest.?

I was a little baffled when I saw excerpt. Then I saw the editorial written by Producer Drew Sandholm where he gave the following definition of a ?contrarian investor:?

?In the investment world, a contrarian is someone who takes a position that differs from the majority. If a particular sector is ?hated? by most investors, a contrarian might want to buy in. After all, if few investors like the sector, a contrarian thinks there are few people left to sell, making it immune to big declines.?

Sandholm went on to write that Cramer feels the strategy to be ?too hazardous? to recommend. It infers that contrarian investing is based purely on sentiment and that investors should be using fundamentals and research to decide which companies to invest in.

However, here at Investment U, we don?t feel these two things are mutually exclusive. You can still look for solid fundamentals in regions and sectors that were abandoned by ?the herd.?

For instance, Alexander Green recently wrote about finding fundamentally sound companies in the beaten-down natural gas sector.

Contrarian Investing is Based on Fundamentals

Contrarians aren?t rebellious teens, rejecting their parents? way of investing. What the piece misses is that contrarian investing is based on fundamentals. Many times popular investment sentiment is not. Do we need to remind you of the dot com and housing bubbles?

Investment U defines a contrarian investor as someone who believes in independent wealth building and profits rather than the actions of the herd. The key isn?t to go against the grain for the sake of being different, but to find opportunities based on solid fundamentals that are ignored or shunned by everyone else. And if this is done successfully, then you get in on the ground floor and watch profits rise as the rest of the investment world gets a clue.

In Cramer?s defense, I believe he?s specifically speaking about those investors who are looking at whether a sector is under or overweighted compared to the S&P 500 in an attempt to time the market. But that definition doesn?t cover the whole contrarian movement.

The Vast Spectrum of Contrarian Investing

I don?t think anyone out there would call Jim Rogers, George Soros, or Warren Buffett contrarian day traders. However, the contrarian part of that statement is true.

  • Jim Rogers loves buying undervalued assets. What he saw in gold and silver over a decade ago, he currently sees in the agricultural sector. Agriculture prices are ? on a historical basis ? extremely depressed and this is where he sees his next opportunity.
  • On September 16, 1992, Black Wednesday, Soros? fund sold short more than $10 billion in pounds, profiting from the U.K. government?s reluctance to either raise its interest rates to levels comparable to those of other European Exchange Rate Mechanism countries or to float its currency.
  • Warren Buffett is famously ?greedy when others are fearful and fearful when others are greedy.? He focuses on the quality of the business rather than the short-term or near-future share price or market moves. He takes a long-term, large scale, business value-based investment approach that concentrates on good fundamentals and intrinsic business value, rather than the share price. His recent bets on housing are a good example of his contrarian prowess.

So, I do agree with Cramer that investors should avoid investing simply on sentiment. But that?s not our brand of contrarian investing anyways. We look for fundamentally strong businesses in areas where many investors essentially threw the baby out with the bathwater.

Good Investing,

Jason Jenkins

Fifty Shades of Grey Sparks Rise in S&M, Bondage, Rope Sales

Fifty Shades of Grey is a must-read for women everywhere. Apparently, the EL James novel is also making S&M and bondage gear a must-buy for some.

The buzzed-about book has left unassuming New York women so feverish, they’re snapping up the tools and toys that the hunky Christian Grey favors.

They’re even slipping into stores and asking for bondage material - the very type of natural-filament rope used in the trilogy - the New York Post reports.

50 Shades Cover

“Oh, we’ve been selling rope to women,” says Clifton Kahn, owner of Lexington Hardware on the Upper East Side. “I’d say tenfold more rope than usual."

"The women are definitely buying, and it’s still continuing.”

Apparently tying someone up isn't expensive. The store’s most popular item is soft-cotton “clothes line” rope, which retails at a bargain $5 for 50 feet.

Tarzian Hardware in Park Slope, Brooklyn, has also seen the trend.

“It’s usually men buying rope, but the women, they’ve been coming in the last few months,” a manager told the newspaper. “I’ve actually read the book. So when the women buy rope, it was kind of like, ‘Hmmm, that does seem unusual.’”

While New Yorkers act out their fantasies, casting the movie roles of Christian and Anastasia has become an online fantasy game of sorts this spring.

Some stars, such as Ian Somerhalder, have expressed interest in the film themselves. Who can you see as the two leads? Vote in our polls below!

Who should play Christian?

Who should play Ana?

StoryWalk The Curious Garden at Tamarack ... - Free Family Fun!

StoryWalk TM Project on Stone Cutter's WayTamarack Nature Center is offering a StoryWalk? adventure for you and your family on Sunday between 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m..? Your family can enjoy a story while exploring the great outdoors. As you walk, you will be able to read a book together page-by-page along the walking paths. StoryWalk? is an initiative that combines a children?s story with a popular walking route? It was developed in 2007 by Anne Ferguson, a volunteer with the The Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition.? A children?s book is selected, the pages are separated, laminated and attached to wooden stakes. The stakes are then placed at regular intervals along paths so readers can follow the story as they walk the route.

The story for this walk will be The Curious Garden,?by Peter Brown.? As you explore, you will be able to read the book together page-by-page along the walking paths and in Discovery Hollow.?Discover how a curious little boy and his garden can transform a city from drab to fab!

All Ages Welcome
Sunday, July 1st, 2-4 pm
This program is free, preregistration is not required.

The Ramsey County Board of Commissioners has waived admission fees for 2012. Donations are gladly accepted and support the programming and operation for the Nature Play Area and Children?s Garden.

If you Google, ?The Curious Garden Activities,? you can find a ton of activities that can be brought home to extend this book.? It?s a beautiful book both for children and adults.? It really makes you want to get out and transform your own little world.? I want to try to pair this with a trip to the Farmers market to buy some veggies and? try one of the recipes they are always handing out.

Another way to go with this activity is the StoryWalk itself.? We have so many wonderful children?s books that have been loved to pieces over the years ? some that have been through multiple generations.? What do you do with these books when they no longer want to stay together, but you love the story too much to throw it away?? Why not post your own indoor StoryWalk?? (Although, if you only have one copy, you will have to be able to get to both sides of the page.)? Suite 101 offers seven more ideas for re-using old storybooks.? These ideas are great springboards for all sorts of creative ideas.? You may have to start buying beat up thrift shop books, just to keep up with your kids art projects.? Ameilia?s House also offers an entire party plan based on books and book art projects.? Some of these ideas could be borrowed for family art time.

ECS Z77H2-AX

We realize that a motherboard?s appearance is usually only of importance to the most die-hard enthusiasts?you know, the kinds of people who have cases with side-panel windows and work fastidiously to ensure there?s no dust inside?but the ECS Z77H2-AX, designed for Intel?s LGA1155 socket, would be a head-turner for anyone. Adorning the jet-black PCB are shimmering gold-colored accents that make the board?s crucial parts?the socket cover, heat sinks, the resistors, rear-panel ports, and even their associated I/O plate?into 24-karat eye candy. Is that alone enough to justify the Z77H2-AX?s platinum-plated price of $309.99? For most people, probably not. But if you consider aesthetics a make-or-break feature, you won?t find a better motherboard than this.

It?s worth pointing out that, according to ECS, the benefits of all the gold aren?t just visual. The gold plating on the CPU pins, memory sockets, and PCI Express (PCIe) slots reportedly increase stability up to three times, and on the cooling modules speed thermal dissipation; ECS also touts their ?anti-oxidation, anti-rust, and anti-moisture? benefits. Those qualities are difficult for us to test, but there?s no doubt that they up the Z77H2-AX?s luxury factor by an order of magnitude or two.

Because of its socket, the ATX-form-factor Z77H2-AX will work for you whether you want to load it with a processor from the current third-generation Core (aka ?Ivy Bridge?) family or from last year?s Sandy Bridge line. If you want, two video outputs (VGA and HDMI) let you take advantage of the CPU?s integrated graphics system, with LucidLogix?s Virtu Universal MVP GPU Virtualization providing dynamic switching between integrated and discrete graphics. If you don?t want, there are three PCIe x16 slots version 3.0 slots for installing up to three discrete video cards using either AMD?s or Nvidia?s GPUs (though, if you use three cards, the third slot will run at x8 rather than x16, due to limitations with the PCIe bus). The Intel Z77 Express chipset the motherboard uses allows you to overclock the CPU and specify a solid-state drive (SSD) for use in data caching by way of Intel?s Smart Response Technology. (For more about SRT, check out our review of the Intel SSD 311 Series.)

All this suggests a motherboard stuffed to the gills with gaming-friendly features, and a look at the rest of the Z77H2-AX certainly bears this out. Four memory slots support up to 32GB of dual-channel DDR3 1600 RAM (or DDR3 2800 when overclocked). The Intel drive controller lets you connect two 3Gbps SATA II devices and two 6Gbps SATA III devices (with RAID Levels 0, 1, 5, and 10 all options); a secondary ASMedia ASM1061 controller provides two additional SATA III ports. The expansion slot roster is rounded out with two PCIe x1 slots, two regular PCI slots, and even a Mini PCIe x1 slot for connecting an additional device (such as an mSATA card for use with SRT, a feature we previously saw last generation in the Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3-iSSD).

In addition to the aforementioned VGA and HDMI outputs, on the rear panel you?ll find eight USB ports (four each of USB 3.0 and USB 2.0), two 6Gbps eSATA ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port (RealTek RTL 8111E), an S/PDIF jack, five ports for utilizing the integrated eight-channel audio system (RealTek ALC892), a button to clear the CMOS, and the built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi receivers. Want even more ports on your system? You can add four more USB ports (two each USB 3.0 and USB 2.0) through the use of the onboard headers; ECS has even prepared you for their use by including a USB 3.0 panel designed to fit in one of your case?s external 3.5-inch drive bays.

The Z77H2-AX boasts a number of additional technologies as well. On the proprietary side, ECS Super Alloy Choke promises a 50-percent increase in system stability by increasing energy efficiency, better maintaining operating temperatures, and reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI). EZ Charger provides three times more current through the motherboard?s USB ports than is usually the case, so you can charge your devices more quickly. ECS?s fully graphical UEFI offers an excellent (and mouse-compatible) way to tweak your system settings.

Performance of the Z77H2-AX (when using a Core i7-3770K processor) on our suite of benchmark tests was generally in line with what we?ve seen from other first-wave Ivy Bridge motherboards, if more often than not on the lower end of the spectrum. The one area in which the Z77H2-AX stood out, however, was power usage. We measured the draw of our full test-bed system, which also used an Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 video card, with an Extech Datalogger both at idle and with all the CPU cores pegged. In both cases the Z77H2-AX used the most electricity: 85 watts for the former, and 158.5 watts for the latter. By way of comparison, the lowest-power Ivy Bridge motherboard we?ve tested so far, the Intel Desktop Board DZ77GA-70K drew only 71.2 watts when idle and 136.3 watts under full load.

For most users, a motherboard?s power draw isn?t going to be a deal-breaker?but the ECS EZ77H2-AX is already among the most expensive Ivy Bridge?ready models you can buy. If you?re primarily concerned about in-box extras, you?ll get more of them overall with the Editors? Choice Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe?which also costs less ($284.99 list) and uses less power. Even if the EZ77H2-AX isn?t the all-around champ, it?s a fine LGA1155 motherboard with dazzling beauty that no others on the market can currently match.

Big Bang didn't need God to start universe, researchers say

Our universe could have popped into existence 13.7 billion years ago without any divine help whatsoever, researchers say.

That may run counter to our instincts, which recoil at the thought of something coming from nothing. But we shouldn't necessarily trust our instincts, for they were honed to help us survive on the African savannah 150,000 years ago, not understand the inner workings of the universe.

Instead, scientists say, we should trust the laws of physics.

"The Big Bang could've occurred as a result of just the laws of physics being there," said astrophysicist Alex Filippenko of the University of California, Berkeley. "With the laws of physics, you can get universes."

Filippenko spoke here Saturday (June 23) at the SETICon 2 conference, during a panel discussion called "Did the Big Bang Require a Divine Spark?" [Images: Peering Back to the Big Bang]

Quantum fluctuations
In the very weird world of quantum mechanics, which describes action on a subatomic scale, random fluctuations can produce matter and energy out of nothingness. And this can lead to very big things indeed, researchers say.

"Quantum mechanical fluctuations can produce the cosmos," said panelist Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the non-profit Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute. "If you would just, in this room, just twist time and space the right way, you might create an entirely new universe. It's not clear you could get into that universe, but you would create it."

"So it could be that this universe is merely the science fair project of a kid in another universe," Shostak added. "I don't know how that affects your theological leanings, but it is something to consider."

Filippenko stressed that such statements are not attacks on the existence of God. Saying the Big Bang ? a massive expansion 13.7 billion years ago that blew space up like a gigantic balloon ? could have occurred without God is a far cry from saying that God doesn't exist, he said.

"I don't think you can use science to either prove or disprove the existence of God," Filippenko said.

The origin of the laws of physics
If we're after the ultimate origin of everything, however, invoking the laws of physics doesn't quite do the trick. It may get us one step closer, but it doesn't take us all the way, Filippenko said.

"The question, then, is, 'Why are there laws of physics?'" he said. "And you could say, 'Well, that required a divine creator, who created these laws of physics and the spark that led from the laws of physics to these universes, maybe more than one.'"

But that answer just continues to kick the can down the road, because you still need to explain where the divine creator came from. The process leads to a never-ending chain that always leaves you short of the ultimate answer, Filippenko said.

The origin of the laws of physics remains a mystery for now, he added, one that we may never be able to solve.

"The 'divine spark' was whatever produced the laws of physics," Filippenko said. "And I don't know what produced that divine spark. So let's just leave it at the laws of physics."

The finding upends previous studies, which had estimated that the Red Planet's internal water stores were scanty at best ? something of a surprise, given that liquid water apparently flowed on the Martian surface long ago.

"It's been puzzling why previous estimates for the planet's interior have been so dry," co-author Erik Hauri of the Carnegie Institution of Washington said in a statement. "This new research makes sense and suggests that volcanoes may have been the primary vehicle for getting water to the surface."

The scientists examined two Martian meteorites that formed in the planet's mantle, the layer under the crust. These rocks landed on Earth about 2.5 million years ago, after being blasted off the Red Planet by a violent impact.

Using a technique called secondary ion mass spectrometry, the team determined that the mantle from which the meteorites derived contained between 70 and 300 parts per million (ppm) of water. Earth's mantle, for comparison, holds roughly 50 to 300 ppm water, researchers said.

"The results suggest that water was incorporated during the formation of Mars and that the planet was able to store water in its interior during the planet's differentiation," Hauri said.

Some of this water apparently made its made to the surface in the ancient past. NASA's Spirit and Opportunity rovers, which landed on the Red Planet in 2004, have found plenty of evidence that Mars was far warmer and wetter billions of years ago than it is today.

The two golf-cart-size robots have even spotted signs of ancient hydrothermal systems, suggesting that some places on the Red Planet once had both water and an energy source ? two key ingredients for the existence of life as we know it.

While the new results should help scientists better understand Mars and its history, they could also shed light on the evolution of large, rocky bodies in a more general sense, researchers said.

"Not only does this study explain how Mars got its water, it provides a mechanism for hydrogen storage in all the terrestrial planets at the time of their formation," lead author Francis McCubbin of the University of New Mexico said in a statement.

The study was published in the journal Geology on June 15.

FBI: new IP scheme could hinder law enforcement

10 hrs.

If you were to do a little casual searching for enriched uranium or used AK-47s, you might show up on the FBI's radar, and tools that have been in place for years let them associate your computer's IP address with a name, company or location (FBI.gov itself,?for example, above). But a new Internet?protocol threatens existing methods, and the FBI warns that unless existing Internet management companies make some changes, it will become far more difficult to track down criminals the way they do today.

IPv6 is a new version of the numbering system that underlies Internet addresses. The previous version has actually run out of unique numbers to issue for websites and servers, but the new one is much more future-proof.?The problem is that existing bookkeeping methods for recording and retaining IP addresses?aren't going to be sufficient for the new system.

As an FBI spokesman tells CNET:

Today there are complete registries of what IPv4 addresses are "owned" by an operator. Depending on how the IPv6 system is rolled out, that registry may or may not be sufficient for law enforcement to identify what device is accessing the Internet.

It's part of a larger problem: law enforcement's ability to monitor the Internet is falling behind the way the Internet operates, and the way people use it. New services and ways of communicating are coming out faster than laws can be made and modified.?Recently they have complained of being unable to access data using the anonymizing Tor network, and have met with companies like Google and Facebook to ask for backdoor access. Only if approved by a judge, of course.

See related:?'Dark Net' keeps FBI from investigating child porn

With IPv6, the FBI contends that access isn't the problem, but that the companies allocating, managing, and tracking IP addresses are not planning on putting in the effort to meet the FBI's needs. All those new IP addresses, millions and billions of them, may not be tracked as minutely as they used to when there were fewer to worry about.

If these companies would voluntarily up their game, that would be ideal, says the FBI. If requirements have to be legislated, relationships are strained and companies will escape through loopholes as the process of mending the law lags behind.

IPv6 is still a ways from being rolled out universally, however, so there's still plenty of time for the FBI to negotiate. Whether anyone will play ball is another story altogether.

OSLO, Norway (AP) ? It has taken more than two decades, countless lonely nights and imponderable hardships for Aung San Suu Kyi to reach the Oslo podium. But Myanmar's celebrated former political prisoner is finally getting the chance to make her case for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Suu Kyi landed in the Norwegian capital and home for the world's greatest diplomatic honor Friday, a day ahead of a speech that many thought she would never be permitted to make.

The 66-year-old democracy activist is expected Saturday to thank the Nobel committee and the people of Norway for the prize she won in 1991 ? the second year of her 21-year existence as an exile within her own homeland. Fifteen of those years she spent in prisons or confined to her dilapidated lakeside home, the rest fearful of traveling abroad lest Myanmar's military dictators prevent her return.

Norwegian leaders and artists offered a heartfelt welcome for Suu Kyi as she arrived from Switzerland, her first stop on a planned two-week tour of Europe also taking in Ireland, Britain and France, her first visit to Europe since 1988.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg invited her to his official residence for talks, then the pair departed for a state-style dinner at the medieval Akurshus Castle overlooking the capital's ship-filled harbor, fjord and islands against a backdrop of a slow-blooming Nordic sunset. Sharing the head table were King Harald and Queen Sonja.

"You have dedicated your life to the struggle for democracy in your country, and you are an inspiration for all of us," Stoltenberg told Suu Kyi during a joint news conference. "The new political reality in Myanmar is remarkable. We have witnessed great changes in less than a year. Your presence here in Oslo is proof that your long fight for democracy and justice for your people is really paying off."

He and Suu Kyi agreed that difficult, careful diplomacy could still be required with the military-backed Myanmar government of President Thein Sein, a retired general who rose to power last year, to cede power to Suu Kyi's opposition National League for Democracy. The Myanmar junta's peace moves, under international pressure, brought her release from house arrest in 2010 and her party's triumph in parliamentary byelections in April.

"We are certainly not at the end of the road, by no means, we are just starting out," Suu Kyi said of her efforts to coax Myanmar's military chiefs toward accepting democracy. "And this road is not going to be a straightforward, smooth one. There are going to be many twists and turns and obstacles, but we are going to have to negotiate these in the spirit of national reconciliation."

After Saturday's Nobel speech, Suu Kyi is scheduled to tour an elaborate display at the fjord-side Nobel Peace Center chronicling her life's key moments of despair, determination and triumph.

"(Her visit) means a lot to the Norwegian people because we admire her so much and we have longed to see her coming here and give her Nobel speech," said the executive director of the Nobel center, Bente Erichsen.

Suu Kyi made it to Oslo despite falling ill Thursday at a news conference in Bern, Switzerland. Her aides said she was suffering from exhaustion due to overwork and jet lag, and while she appeared tired at Friday's Oslo events, she made no comment on it.

She is scheduled to spend three days in Oslo and the Norwegian city of Bergen, then travel to the Irish capital, Dublin, on Monday for a celebrity-studded concert in her honor with U2 frontman Bono. After that, it's back to Oxford University, where she studied before her 1980s blossoming into the leading voice for democracy in Myanmar, also known by its British colonial name of Burma.

Bono was expected to join her at an Oslo news conference Monday and fly with her to Dublin. He will then present her with another award postponed by her long home imprisonment, Amnesty International's Ambassador of Conscience, which Bono had unveiled at a Dublin U2 concert in 2009.

Earlier Friday, Suu Kyi visited Switzerland's Parliament and met government officials in Bern, where crowds greeted her with cheers and bouquets of flowers. She received a standing ovation from Swiss lawmakers, mirroring the rock star reception that greeted her Thursday at the United Nations in Geneva.

But when asked if her euphoric European reception this week as Myanmar's rightful leader might upset the generals and lead to renewed repression, she dismissed the prospect.

"I cannot see any good reason why either President Thein Sein and his government or the military should object to this," she said. "Certainly I don't think they have anything to fear in the interest that other countries show in my party and myself, because we want to work for national reconciliation. And we will not do anything to harm that."

Suu Kyi was released from junta-imposed house arrest in November 2010. In April 2012 she won a seat in the country's national assembly, her first opportunity to run for office.

Myanmar's military rulers first jailed her in 1989, the year before her National League for Democracy triumphed in Myanmar's first open elections. The junta quashed that result, refused to surrender power, and did not hold new elections until 2010. U.N. and U.S. officials branded that vote fraudulent, partly because Suu Kyi was barred from running as a candidate.

When asked by a reporter if she had ever imagined, in the decades since her Nobel honor, she would reach Oslo one day, Suu Kyi raised her brows with incredulity and smiled broadly.

"Yes of course, I always believed that. That's why I have always said that the first time I traveled abroad I would come to Norway," she said. "I never doubted that. Did you?"

Father's Day: A Pop-Culture Gift Guide

To help you show your appreciation for dad, MTV News compiles a list of must-have items.

Provided your dad didn't go out for cigarettes and never came back, you'll be celebrating him and all his paternal excellence on Sunday, which — in case you forgot — just so happens to be the 102nd (or so) Father's Day.

And while we here at MTV News would like to point out that you should probably honor your father every day (after all, who else can teach you about the infield fly rule, the double Windsor knot and the rhythm method?), we realize that, more often than not, dad is just the guy you roll your eyes at from the backseat of the car. So perhaps this is the year you finally do him right, with a totally sweet Father's Day gift.

Which is where we come in: Using the full force of the MTV News brain trust, we've compiled a list of gifts sure to make his Father's Day special. From movies and video games to ultra-cool accessories and totally killer rock records, these are the must-haves for any dad.

Because he's worth it. And also because he probably doesn't want another tie.

For the dad still stuck in the 1980s: How about a pair of tickets to "Rock of Ages," the film that captures the rock and roll excesses of the Reagan era in all their full-throttled, feathered-hair glory? Sure, it might be super-embarrassing to sit next to him as he plays air guitar to Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me," but imagine how he feels when you make him drop you off a block and a half away from the mall. You're even.

For the dad who's a super-nerd ... and really into beheadings: Get him a Blu-ray copy of the first season of "Game of Thrones," the bloody-great HBO show that redefines sheer nerdery as we know it. "Thrones" has truly got something for every dad. Machiavellian political dealings, gripping drama and dripping combat scenes — it's all there for the viewing. And shoot, even if he's not into swords and sorcery, there's plenty of nudity. This is what we in the business refer to as a "win/win."

For the dad who fancies himself an anti-hero: Pick up "Max Payne 3," the latest installment of Rockstar Games' truly excellent shooter series. Set eight years after the last game, it finds Max overweight and overwrought, popping pills and dealing with a serious late-life crisis. (Just like your dad!) Of course, it's not all drama; in fact, the third "Payne" game brings back the much-saluted "bullet-time" technology, which slows down the shootouts and maximizes the cinematic gore. As an added bonus, the folks at Rockstar also tout the fact that the killing is more realistic than ever this time out. Plenty of bad guys to smoke, plenty of brooding to be done: It's the kind of feel-good game you and your dad can play together. Ah, memories.

For the dad who wants the latest in shut-in couture: Get him one of the limited-edition Supreme T-shirts designed by noted oddball auteur (and illustrator) Daniel Johnston. Filled with illustrations of cross-bearing Captain Americas, boxing aliens and, uh, more Captain Americas, they're guaranteed to make dad the hit of his next office mixer — and to totally freak out all of his co-workers, too.

For the dad who's totally awesome: Download him a copy of Japandroids' Celebration Rock, the year's most kick-ass rock record. Full of fist-pumping riffs and shout-worthy sing-alongs, it'll take him back to the good old days, when rock was played fast and loud and you could get away with giving songs titles like "Fire's Highway." He'll probably take off his shirt and crack open a cold one, but deal with it. Dad's gotta cut loose somehow.

For the skater dad: Head out to Macy's and pick him out something from Lil Wayne's new Trukfit line, a collection of colorful hats and tees with just enough swag for the skate park. And as if some Weezy association isn't enough to make your pops super cool, consider this: The clothing line's name is an acronym for "The Reason U Kill for It," which automatically makes him the hardest dad on the block.
