LOS ANGELES (AP) ? There had to be an auction, but so soon?

A black velvet dress that belonged to Whitney Houston and a pair of earrings she wore in "The Bodyguard" will be sold to the highest bidder next month.

Celebrity auctioneer Darren Julien said Sunday the pieces and other Houston items became available after the singer's unexpected death on Feb. 11 and will be included among a long-planned sale of Hollywood memorabilia such as Charlie Chaplin's cane, Clark Gable's jacket from "Gone With the Wind" and Charlton Heston's staff from "The Ten Commandments."

Julien said celebrity collectibles often become available after their namesakes die.

"It proves a point that these items, they're an investment," Julien said. "You buy items just like a stock. Buy at the right time and sell at the right time, and they just increase in value."

But could it be too soon to profit from Houston's passing? She was just buried on Saturday.

"It's a celebration of her life," Julien said. "If you hide these things in fear that you're going to offend someone ? her life is to be celebrated. These items are historic now that she passed. They become a part of history. They should be in museums. She's lived a life and had a career that nobody else has ever had."

Houston is "someone who's going to maintain a collectability," he said. "For people who are fans of Whitney Houston and never would have had a chance to meet her and never got to talk to her, these are items that literally touched a part of her life. They are a way to relate to her or be a part of her life without having known her."

The singer's floor-length black dress is valued at $1,000 but likely to collect much more. Same goes for the vest she wore in "The Bodyguard," listed at $400, and the faux-pearl earrings that start at $600.

Houston fans and other collectors can bid online, by phone or in person during the "Hollywood Legends" auction on March 31 and April 1. Lots will be shown during a free public exhibition beginning March 19 at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, Calif., just blocks from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where Houston died at age 48.

?When should we plant?? is a question increasingly being asked by small farmers in sub-Saharan Africa who depend on rain-fed agriculture. To help answer such questions, climate scientists are being urged to provide more reliable and relevant local climate data, and better communicate their knowledge on climate adaptation techniques.

?When we think about preparing for imminent disasters it is not possible to prepare for flooding, for example, just a few days in advance, which we get from the weather forecast. We need to think about preparedness further in advance and think in terms of what kind of decisions we can make, say, three months in advance, such as moving important resources away. We need a continuum of information,? said Simon Mason, the chief climate scientist at Columbia University?s International Research Institute (IRI) in the USA.

According to Mason, more effective short, mid-range and seasonal weather forecasting is needed for the development of useful early warning systems.

Spatial weather tools, including satellite imagery and weather forecasts, allow the processing of weather data over different space and time frames. By allowing better integration of historical data with real-time weather data, such tools can improve the accuracy and impact of forecasts.

?If we are using projections of what will happen in 80 years to plan for the next 10 years, then we will have very bad information,? he said. ?We have to match the kind of climate information we have with our decision-making time frames? For [climate] adaptation, we are much more interested in what is going to happen in the next few years,? he said.

Mason was speaking at a recent forum on disaster risk management at which a partnership between the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) and the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD) was launched. The partnership is aimed at facilitating the linkage between climate scientists and disaster risk managers as well as policymakers.

?There is a need to convert the information coming from scientists into usable material such as maps? There is a need to strengthen more partnerships with regard to climate change in the Horn of Africa region,? said ISDR Africa head Pedro Basabe.

Poor linkages in the past have meant that climate research does not necessarily inform policy for disaster mitigation: Complicated, long-range climate projections are often hard to sell to policymakers.

?We are fairly renowned for being incomprehensible to everybody,? said Mason.

User-friendly data

To help make climate data more palatable, the World Meteorological Organization?s?Global Framework for Climate Services(GFCS) is helping with capacity-building in regional climate bodies such as ACMAD, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the Climate Predication and Applications Centre (ICPAC). This in turn can assist national bodies produce customized information that is more relevant for communities.

Communication training workshops with climate scientists are also planned.

?There is a need to provide the science in summary for the policymakers. We need to try [to] communicate science in a more simple and relevant manner,? said Maarten van Aalst, director of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre.

In a situation where climate projections are fraught with uncertainty, van Aalst said: ?We need to plan [for disasters] in as practical circumstances as possible, even in anticipation of better information.?

[Abstract]

Background and ObjectiveColorectal cancer is one of the most commonly occurring malignancies in the world. The treatment of early-stage tumors decreases the overall mortality of colorectal cancers. The key to early discovery of colorectal cancer is to screen in the average-risk population. The generally used methods of screening and early diagnosis of colorectal cancer are fecal occult blood test (FOBT) and colonoscopy. FOBT is non-invasive but with relatively high false-positive and high false-negative rate. In comparison, colonoscopy is the gold standard of diagnosis of colorectal cancer but with the disadvantage of invasion and high cost. Nowadays, detection of colorectal exfoliated cells and their gene mutations may provide another non-invasive way of screening and early diagnosis of colorectal cancer. However, the extraction rate of exfoliated cells from stool is not so high and the extraction process is too complicated. Therefore, the method of extracting exfoliated cells from stool has not been widely applied. We attempt to improve the approaches of isolating and extracting exfoliated cells from stool, further to evaluate the roles of exfoliated cells in diagnosis of colorectal cancer.Materials and Methods1. To evaluate the effect of preservative solution of intestinal cells. Eight patients with colorectal cancer entered in the study. Three stool samples were taken from every patient and were given different treatments. Then the same isolation and extraction process of exfoliated cells was done in every stool sample, after that, HE stain and observations with microscope were done at last.2. Further verification of methodology of exfoliated cells. Ten patients with colorectal cancer entered in the study. Two different ways of collecting intestinal exfoliated cells were used in every patient. Then the same isolation and extraction process of exfoliated cells was done in every stool sample, after that, HE dyeing and Observations with microscope were done at last.3. Analysis of the extraction rate of the intestinal exfoliated cells from different part of the stool samples. Ten patients with colorectal cancer entered in the study. Both samples from inside the stool and outside the stool were taken from every patient. Then the same isolation and extraction process of exfoliated cells was done in every stool sample, after that, HE dyeing and observations with microscope were done at last.4. Detection rate of exfoliated cells in different times of stool after intake of 3000ml laxation. Seventeen patients randomly selected entered in the study. After they took 3000ml laxation, the second, third, fourth and fifth times of stool were collected respectively. Then the same isolation and extraction process of exfoliated cells was done in every stool sample, after that, HE dyeing and observations with microscope were done at last.5. Isolation and extraction of exfoliated cells from patients with upper gastrointestinal cancers. Twenty-two patients with upper gastrointestinal cancers entered in the study. Stool sample was collected from every patient. Then the same isolation and extraction process of exfoliated cells was done in every stool sample, after that, HE dyeing and observations with microscope were done at last.6. Evaluate the methodology of colorectal exfoliated cells in stool and the clinical significance in patients with colorectal cancer. Forty-one patients with colorectal cancer, thirty-four patients with colorectal adenoma and twenty healthy volunteers entered in the study. Naturally defecated stool and stool after intake of laxation were collected from every object. Then the same isolation and extraction process of exfoliated cells and fecal occult blood test were done in every stool sample, after that, HE dyeing and observations with microscope were done at last.Results1. After three days in the room temperature, exfoliated cells could be isolated and extracted in the stool with preservative solution, by contrast, no exfoliated cells could be detected in the stool without preservative solution.2. The extraction of exfoliated cells from stool taken under colonoscopy was in accordance with the extraction result from the same stool blended with the naturally defecated feces of the same patient.3. Of ten patients with colorectal cancer, exfoliated cells were extracted from four samples from the inside of the stool and the extraction rate was 40%; exfoliated cells were extracted from outside of the stool and the extraction rate was 50%. No significant difference was found between the two group of samples (X~2=0.202, P=0.653>0.05).4. The best extraction results of the exfoliated cells found from the second stool after intake of laxation was 12.5%(2/16), that from the third stool sample was 5.88%(1/17), that from the forth stool sample was 56.25%(9/16) and that from the fifth stool sample was 40.00%(6/15).5. No exfoliated malignant cells were found from stool of the twenty-two patients with esophageal carcinomas and gastric cancers.6. The detection rate of exfoliated cells from naturally defecated feces was 46.34%(19/41), while that from feces after laxation was 36.59%(15/41). The detection rate was 68.29%(28/41) if both kinds of stool samples were isolated and extracted. The detection rate was significantly higher in two kinds of stool samples together than in single stool sample. 7. Exfoliated cytology and fecal occult blood test. Cytology was positive in twenty-eight (68.29%) of forty-one patients with colorectal cancer and fecal occult blood test was positive in thirty-one (75.61%) of forty-one patients with colorectal cancer. No significant difference was found between the sensitivities of fecal occult blood test and exfoliated cells test (X~2=0.544,P>0.05), but significant differences were found between the complementary method and the FOBT (X~2=4.479,P

The Adelson-Gingrich connection dates from the candidate?s tenure as US speaker of the House in the late 1990s, when the two men conferred over legislation in support of Israel. Those ties are especially on display in Nevada, which holds its presidential caucuses Saturday.?

As of Feb. 2, the Gingrich campaign itself had yet to buy TV, cable, or radio ads in the Las Vegas media market. But the Adelson-funded Winning Our Future super PAC did give Gingrich a radio presence in the run-up to the Nevada caucuses, running 203 pro-Gingrich ads and 62 anti-Mitt Romney ads, according to Media Monitors, based in White Plains, N.Y. The Romney campaign and Restore Our Future, a super PAC backing Romney, otherwise dominated TV, cable, and radio in the Las Vegas market, producing 1,116 spots overall, compared with 277 for Gingrich, 256 for Ron Paul, and seven for Rick Santorum.

Typically, the Nevada caucuses begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. But in an 11th-hour decision, the Nevada Republican Party, with support from Mr. Adelson, added a special caucus venue at the Adelson Educational Campus, a private school in Las Vegas, to encourage participation by Orthodox Jews after sundown. This caucus begins at 7 p.m. As a footnote, Gingrich is staying at the Venetian resort, a subsidiary of Adelson?s Las Vegas Sands.
