AFC Seoul (July 28, 2013) China finished their East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) Cup campaign unbeaten after edging Australia 4-3 in a high scoring thriller played at the Jamsil Olympic Stadium on Sunday.
In the last-round match of the round-robin format competition, Yu Dabao, Sun Ke, Yang Xu and Wu Lei scored a goal apiece for the Chinese who are the only finalists amongst four nations involved in the qualifiers of the AFC Asian Cup 2015.
China, fielding a strong side in the competition, went ahead against Holger Osieck side as early as in the 5th minute through Dabao after Sun Xiang released an ideal cross at the centre.
Western Sydney Wanderers attacking midfielder Aaron Mooy brought the score at 1-1 level in the 30th minute but the relentless Chinese dominated the proceedings in the second half when Ke put China 2-1 ahead in the 56th minute.
The dramatic final four minutes produced the remaining of the goals as when Xu and Lei scored goals respectively in the 87th and 88th minute to make it 4-1 for the Chinese, it looked like that the game was over but Australia responded with two goals in the death from Adam Taggart and Mitchell Duke. It was too little too late for the Socceroos as they went down 4-3 in a highly entertaining match of the competition.
Australia qualified automatically in the AFC Asian Cup 2015 which they will host while China have managed a win in two matches of Group C of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers so far.

"I'm leaving with a sense of responsibility but also with great hope,? she said. ?There is now an opportunity for both sides to pave the way towards resolving the conflict, which is extracting a heavy price from both nations.?
CLEVELAND (Reuters) - One of the three women starved, beaten and sexually assaulted for years after being kidnapped by former Ohio school bus driver Ariel Castro made a surprise public appearance on Saturday at a concert in Cleveland.
Amanda Berry, along with Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, was freed from Castro's home in a rundown area of Cleveland on May 6. The women began disappearing in 2002 and had been bound in chains and ropes during their confinement, authorities said.
Smiling and wearing a black t-shirt, jeans and sunglasses, the 27-year-old Berry received raucous applause as she walked on the stage at the RoverFest 2013 event in downtown Cleveland after being announced by local radio host Rover.
Berry pointed a finger skyward and waved and shook the hands of some of the cheering concert-goers.
"I told her she had a little bit of time to make up on the partying and you guys would help her out tonight," Rover said according to a video posted on YouTube by radio station WMMS.
Berry did not speak before exiting the stage. She was later called back by the rapper Nelly when he finished his set.
Her appearance came two days after Castro pleaded guilty to hundreds of charges of kidnapping and rape in a deal to avoid the death penalty. The move spared Berry, DeJesus, 23, and Knight, 32, from having to testify at a trial.
Castro has agreed to a sentence of life in prison without parole as part of his plea deal. His sentencing is scheduled for August 1.
[unable to retrieve full-text content]Young children who use gestures outperform their peers in problem-solving tasks, says a new study. Children aged between two and five were asked to sort cards printed with colored shapes first by color, then by shape. Making this switch can be tricky but the study found that kids who gesture are more likely to make the mental switch and group the shapes accurately.

The driver of the high-speed train that derailed July 25 at a sharp curve in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, killing at least 80 passengers and?injuring 130 more, told controllers he took the curve at around 190 km/h, despite an 80 km/h speed limit. He survived the crash and is now under investigation by local authorities. Even if the driver turns out to have been responsible for speeding, potential passengers might wonder what else had to fail in the safety system to allow one man?s error to harm so many people.
The crash is the first fatal accident of a high-speed train in Spain, which launched its high-speed network in 1992 and now serves around 100,000 passengers a day. Authorities have not yet assigned it a cause. But it may turn out to be an anomaly. "The most common [reasons for a derailment are] problems with the track or rail and equipment," says mechanical engineer George Bibel at the University of North Dakota, author of Train Wreck: The Forensic of Rail Disasters. While train accidents from Connecticut to France have made news lately, derailments are a declining threat, at least in the U.S., where they dropped about 90 percent from 1976-2011.
The decline is thanks in part to improved monitoring of aging infrastructure such as rails, wheels and bearings, Bibel says. Spanish media reported that the tracks on which this train was running were not designed for the fastest class of high-speed trains. The implication is that the tracks may somehow have contributed to the accident. Lower-grade tracks do vibrate more and wear down faster. And using the same tracks for multiple types of trains, such as high-speed, longer local passenger trains, or even cargo, can also promote uneven metal fatigue. Changing temperatures or wet tracks can combine with worn-down train wheels or uneven loading of a train to promote derailing. Yet things as basic as regular inspections of hot spots with an infrared sensor or of metal fatigue with an ultrasound sensor can alert rail operators to aging infrastructure.
Higher-tech control systems are also emerging. Both the U.S. and Europe are adopting semi-automated braking systems designed to take over from speeding drivers. The track at the accident site, which was very close to the station, used older-generation signaling technology called ASFA, which alerts the driver to upcoming speed restrictions but which cannot override his or her control. The Madrid-Barcelona high-speed train line, in contrast, uses the Level 2 European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), which can override the driver. The train drivers union announced that the tragedy "could have been avoided" if ERTMS had been installed on that stretch of track. Even if that is true, Spain already has one of the highest? ERTMS deployments in Europe. In the U.S., rail authorities have warned that they are unlikely to complete a legislated upgrade to similar technology in time for the 2015 deadline.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Syrian government troops gained ground in clashes Friday in two rebel-held neighborhoods in the central city of Homs, edging closer to a historic mosque and closing in on opposition fighters in the area, state TV and activists said.
The advance came amid a wide offensive by President Bashar Assad's forces, launched in late June, to try to recapture rebel areas in Homs, Syria's third largest city.
With about 1 million residents, Homs lies along a main artery linking the capital, Damascus, with regime strongholds on the Mediterranean coast to the west. It has played a key role in the country's civil war, now in its third year, and the struggle for control of Homs has also underscored the conflict's increasingly sectarian undertones.
Activists, who consider Homs "the capital of the revolution," say the regime wants to capture the entire city to include it in a future Alawite state - stretching from Homs to the coast - where Assad could possibly make his last stand. Assad is a member of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, while most of the rebels fighting to topple his regime are Sunnis.
In recent weeks, Assad's troops have captured several nearby rebel-held areas, including the towns of Qusair and Talkalkh near the border with Lebanon.
State TV said Friday that troops advanced in Homs' northern neighborhoods of Khaldiyeh and Jouret el-Shayah.
The report said the government forces were getting close to Khaldiyeh's 13th-century mosque of Khalid Ibn al-Walid, famous for its nine domes and two minarets. On Monday, government troops shelled the mosque, damaging the tomb of Ibn al-Walid, a revered figure in Islam, inside it.
An activist in the city who only identified himself as Abu Bilal for fear of government reprisals said the troops were now about 50 meters (yards) from the mosque, which has been badly damaged in recent fighting. "Resistance cannot stand up to tanks, warplanes and mortars," Abu Bilal said, speaking from the city via Skype.
In Damascus, officials said pro-government troops were advancing in battles with rebel forces in the now mostly empty Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp. Clashes in the camp, which has mostly been under rebel control since last year, broke out earlier this week.
Since the start of the unrest, Syria's half-million Palestinians have struggled to remain on the sidelines but many were eventually split between pro-and anti-Assad groups. In particular, young Palestinian refugees joined the rebels in the fight against Assad's regime.
Thousands of the camp's residents have fled to escape the fighting and have gone to other areas in Syria or to neighboring Lebanon.
Anwar Raja, a spokesman for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, which is pro-Assad, said Friday that the Palestinians who are fighting with government forces want to "cleanse the camp of terrorists' gangs" and bring back its residents.
Khaled Abdul-Majid of the Popular Struggle Front, another pro-government faction, said the Palestinian fighters, known as Palestinian Popular Committees have captured nearly a third of the mostly empty camp.
Meanwhile, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Syrian warplanes bombed an office of the main al-Qaida-linked rebel group in the northern city of Aleppo.
The strike late Thursday at the local headquarters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant killed six members of the jihadi group, said the Observatory, which has a network of activists on the ground.

The Petzval lens, mounted on Canon and Nikon cameras.
While digital camera makers compete on the sleekest, most high-tech lenses and image stabilization, analog photo lovers at Lomography have decided to take inspiration from the earliest days of the art instead, recreating a unique and influential lens that first appeared back in 1840 ? right down to its brass case and distinctive background blur.
Cameras in the 1840s weren't quite as capable as the ones we have today. Part of this was that the actual photographic process wasn't quite mature, and formulas for photosensitive plates and prints were constantly competing and being revised.
But the lenses used then were also fairly crude ? couldn't gather much light, required long exposures ? and were not nearly as precise or complex as today's. Joseph Petzval, a 19th century math professor at the University of Vienna, worked out a better lens design that hit F/3.6, making it many times faster than its rivals. The Petzval lens was widely used in the 1800s, but times changed, and it was more or less left in the past ? until now.
Lomography
The Petzval's distorted bokeh, or background blur, is a highly sought-after effect.
Lomography wanted to recreate this historic lens, which these days is coveted for its interesting optical effects. So the staff worked with a Russian optics company to figure out what made the Petzval lens tick. Amazingly, they've managed to remake it, funky aperture system and brass casing included.
In fact, they've actually improved it, at least for today's cameras. The new Petzval not only features a wider aperture (F/2.2), but it will be available on both Canon and Nikon DSLR mounts. Before, you'd have to buy some weird adapter, but not anymore.
But most importantly, the beautiful, swirling background blur is there in all its glory. Sure, you can get a similar effect on certain Russian lenses from a few decades back (for cheaper, too) ? but there's nothing like the original. Or at least a reinvention of the original.
The new Petzval lens hit Kickstarter Thursday morning, and as of this writing just crossed the $400,000 line ? four times its initial goal. You can still pledge and receive a lens for $400, which is $100 less than what it will go for once it enters production.

"Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles," an exhibition at Nashville's Frist Center for the Visual Arts, opened last month and will continue through Sept. 15. Curated by Ken Gross, former director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, the collection showcases custom and one-of-a-kind classic cars made from 1929 to 1941, a time when automakers sought to communicate streamlined aerodynamics, luxury and optimism about the future of the machine age.

A San Pedro woman caught on video stealing an iPhone from a supermarket check stand counter admitted to a detective Tuesday that it was her, crying, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," police said.
Maria Veronica Gonzalez, 45, was identified by a woman who saw the video on the Facebook page South Bay Crime and Courts and relayed her suspicion to police through the Daily Breeze reporter who administers the page.
Los Angeles police Detective Don Eldridge said he called Gonzalez, asked her to come to the station and showed her the video.
"She admitted it," he said. "She said, 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry.' ... She said she gave the phone to a friend and she's going to get it back."
Eldridge released the video surveillance tape showing the crime to the Daily Breeze last week with the hope someone could identify the woman. Although the theft was not a major crime, it was captured clearly on video.
The tipster, a follower of the crime page, said in an interview that she recognized the woman from the video.
The crime occurred May 13 after a 45-year-old San Pedro woman left her cellphone on the check stand at Numero Uno Supermarket at Fifth Street and Pacific Avenue.
Moments later, a woman in a red top with a tattoo on the back of her right shoulder walked to the check stand to buy her groceries, saw the phone and picked it up. She appeared for a moment to consider turning it in, but instead walked over to a male companion and gave it to him.
The woman and her companion completed her purchase "" a tub of Neapolitan ice cream, green onions, strawberry juice bars, steak picado and coffee "" walked to a green Kia Soul parked in a handicapped space, and drove away. Neither the woman nor companion appeared to be disabled.
Eldridge said he asked Gonzalez if she was disabled and was told her grandmother was. Eldridge said he reminded Gonzalez the handicapped space is only for the disabled.
Because the crime was a misdemeanor, Gonzalez was not arrested. Eldridge will file his reports with the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office for charges and Gonzalez will be given a court date. In addition to any criminal penalties, Gonzalez could be required to pay restitution to the victim even if the phone is returned. The victim had to purchase a new phone, Eldridge said.
Eldridge called the theft a "straight crime of opportunity." He thanked the public for helping to solve the case.
