Sprint bringing 4G LTE to 4 more cities by Labor Day

Sprint LTE

Earlier, Sprint announced that its 4G LTE network will be coming to Baltimore by the end of summer. It has now added 3 more cities to that announcement. The lucky markets, in addition to Baltimore, are Baltimore, MD, Gainesville, GA, Manhattan/Junction City, KS and Sherman-Denison, TX

The LTE network will go live in these markets by Labor Day, which is September 3rd. We're seeing the carriers competing to expand their LTE networks the quickest, and that's only good for consumers. If you're a Sprint customer and live in one of these markets, you'll soon be able to enjoy the high speeds!

North Korean TV confirms leader Kim is married

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is married, state media confirmed on Wednesday, ending weeks of speculation about the identity of a stylish young woman seen accompanying him at official events.

Kim, believed to be in his late 20s, took over the impoverished nuclear-armed nation when his father Kim Jong-Il died last December, but the intensely secretive state had previously given no details of his private life.

State television reported that the young Kim took part in a ceremony Wednesday with his wife to mark completion of a Pyongyang amusement park.

"Marshal Kim Jong-Un took part in the opening ceremony of Nungra People's Amusement Park with his wife, Comrade Ri Sol-Ju," it said.

The couple were given a warm welcome, the official news agency said. "All the participants enthusiastically welcomed them, loudly shouting 'Hurrah!'", it reported.

A smiling Kim and his wife toured the pleasure grounds and watched a dolphin show "to the tune of joyful music" together with senior party, state and army officials and diplomats, the agency said.

There was no information on how long they have been married.

The short-haired woman was first shown with Kim during a concert in Pyongyang on July 6. She was seen walking next to the leader on July 8 when he visited the mausoleum of his grandfather and the nation's founder Kim Il-Sung.

On July 15, photos aired by state television showed her standing close to the new leader during a visit to a kindergarten.

With other officials staying a few steps behind the pair, she was seen smiling while standing immediately behind or next to Kim as he hugged and talked to children.

In contrast to his late father, who spoke just once at a major public event during his 17 years in power, Kim has cultivated an outgoing and informal style.

He has been seen hugging soldiers, posing for photos with troops and linking arms with women.

The chubby young man physically resembles his late grandfather, who still commands respect among some North Koreans for his past as an anti-Japanese guerrilla fighter and national founder.

"It's quite unusual for North Korea to present its leader and wife together in public," said Yang Moo-Jin of Seoul's University of North Korean Studies.

"This highlights the regime's campaign to create a new image for its leader," he told AFP.

Yang said Kim is also trying to show the people that his leadership is stable.

The United States took the opportunity to reiterate its concerns about the plight of North Koreans under the Kim family dynasty.

"We would always wish any kind of newlyweds well as they embark" on married life, said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, joking that the United States had not been invited to the wedding.

"But obviously our concerns first and foremost are for the North Korean people, and our hope that conditions for them will improve."

Analysts say the new leader appears fully in charge of the nation, despite having had relatively little time to prepare for the succession.

Last week the regime sacked powerful military chief Ri Yong-Ho on the grounds of ill health, in what was seen as a move by the new leader to strengthen his grip on the 1.2 million-strong armed forces.

Kim was later appointed "Marshal" of North Korea, a title previously held by his late father.

The International Crisis Group think-tank, in a report released Wednesday, said he appears to be in charge in his own right despite speculation he would have to rely on close advisers.

But it said there was nothing to suggest he would take measures to improve the lot of his people or reduce regional frictions.

Regional tensions have been high since the North launched a long-range rocket on April 13. It said the aim was to launch a peaceful satellite, while the United States and its allies saw a disguised ballistic missile test.

Ancient diet offers clues to diabetes

The ancient Native Americans of the desert Southwest subsisted on a fiber-filled diet of prickly pear, yucca and flour ground from plant seeds, finds a new analysis of fossilized feces that may explain why modern Native Americans are so susceptible to Type II diabetes.

Thousands of years of incredibly fibrous foods, 20 to 30 times more fibrous than today's typical diet, with low impact on the blood sugar likely left this group vulnerable to the illness when richer Anglo foods made their way to North America, said study researcher Karl Reinhard, a professor of forensic sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.?

"When we look at Native American dietary change within the 20th century, the more ancient traditions disappeared." Reinhard told LiveScience. "They were introduced to a whole new spectrum of foods like fry-bread, which has got a super-high glycemic index."

The glycemic index of a food is a measure of how fast its energy is absorbed into the bloodstream. It's measured on a scale of 1 to 100, with 1 being the slowest absorbing with the least effect on blood sugar. The native people who lived in the deserts of Arizona would have likely eaten traditional stews with glycemic indexes around 23, Reinhard found. Foods scoring lower than 55 are considered "low-GI" foods. [ 7 Perfect Survival Foods ]

Modern food and modern disease
Members of Southwest Native American tribes are more susceptible than Caucasians to Type II diabetes, which happens when the body either doesn't produce enough insulin to break down sugar from food, or when the body's cells fail to recognize the insulin it does produce.

Researchers have long hypothesized that a "thrifty gene" (or, more likely, genes) acquired through feast and famine makes Native American populations more prone to this chronic disease. The idea is that people who were able to rapidly adapt to both lean times and times of plenty would have done better in ancient times. Today, the modern diet has rendered famine rare in the developed world, but the body continues to respond to times of plenty as if starvation is around the corner. Diabetes and obesity can result.

Reinhard and his colleagues now suggest that feast and famine may not be necessary for the "thrifty gene" hypothesis to make sense. Basically, Reinhard said, an extremely low-calorie, high-fiber diet made the ancient Native American gut a paragon of efficiency. With the arrival of whites, the diet changed faster than physiology could keep up with it. In other words, the digestive system didn't evolve for abundant, high-GI foods.?

High-fiber diet
To find solid evidence of what ancient Southwestern tribes actually ate, Reinhard turned to what he called "the most intimate residues from archaeological sites" ? fossilized poop. Known as coprolites, these fossils contain a record of their creator's most recent meals.

The researchers analyzed 25 coprolites from Antelope Cave in northwestern Arizona, a dwelling that was seasonally occupied for thousands of years. These particular coprolites (20 of which turned out to be human) date back to at least A.D. 1150 and earlier. The dates make the cave a perfect time to look at the transition from a total hunter-gatherer lifestyle to one supplemented by some agriculture, Reinhard said.

"It bridges two different dietary traditions, one which has been around for several thousands of years with one that was relatively newly introduced at the time the cave was occupied," he said.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. When it's raining, run, don't walk

When you're caught in a downpour with no umbrella, should you run or walk? Running will get you out of the rain faster, but at the risk of encountering more drops along the way ? and therein lies the dilemma. Now, science gives the go-ahead: in most cases, run.

    2. Searchers find no sign of Amelia Earhart's plane
    3. Loud sex can be deadly for flies
    4. Don't blame Darwin for theater shootings

The analysis revealed that these ancient people chowed down on flour made from maize and wild sunflower and other seeds, as well as on fibrous succulent plants such as yucca and prickly pear. This diet was higher in fiber than anything modern people eat. The feces were three-quarters fiber by volume, Reinhard said, and these Native Americans were probably eating between 200 and 400 grams of the indigestible stuff per day. For comparison, the Institute of Medicine recommends 25 grams of fiber a day for the modern woman, and 38 grams for men. The average adult manages only about 15 grams. [ 8 Reasons Our Waistlines Are Expanding ]

Modern agriculture has favored plants with less fiber, Reinhard said, so even the ancient tribes' maize would have been more fibrous than the corn we eat today.

"When I was a young researcher I tried to replicate this diet, and it was impossible," Reinhard said. "I was essentially eating all day to try to get this fiber."

Evolving diets
In addition, Reinhard and his colleagues reported in the August issue of the journal Current Anthropology, the Southwest Native American diet had a very low glycemic index. Prickly pear pads, a common staple, rate only a 7 on the 100-point GI scale. The highest-GI food these tribes would have had was maize, the researchers found, which would fall at about 57 on the scale ? just two points shy of qualifying as a "low-GI" food today. (Modern sweet corn on the cob has a GI of 60; processed foods like white rice and bagels are in the 90-95 range.)

In addition, prickly pear has a known blood-sugar-lowering effect, Reinhard said. Agave and yucca plants would have also had minimal effect on the blood sugar while providing yet more fiber. Rabbit, including bone fragments, was also found in the fecal fossils.

"The change we have undergone over generations has been toward less appreciation of really resistant foods and more toward what is called a 'Pablum' diet," Reinhard said. "It's kind of like going from chewing on pumpkin seeds to chewing on oatmeal."

The diet seen in the desert Southwest up to just 1,000 years ago is likely similar to what people ate the whole world over up until about 15,000 years ago, Reinhard said. And then humans invented agriculture, cultivating wheat, millet, rice and other grains.

"These plants, as they were cultivated, replaced the really, really ancient foods that everybody ate thousands and thousands of years ago with calorie-dense foods, or grains that could be turned into calorie-dense foods such as grains, rice cakes, and, of course, alcoholic beverages," Reinhard said.

A lot of Helpful hints for Brand new Business Networking ...

If you are used to working in a business environment, and recently were let go, then you may not be conditioned for success when you begin the modern version associated with business networking. Multiple elements come into play, and you won?t possess the safety net of a company to protect you through accidents and mistakes of which you might not even be aware that you make. This article may help you get started in order to become successful as you transition to some business environment which requires you to be more artful and use business networking more regularly.

Some of the mistakes first time networkers make include ones which don?t come into play often inside a major corporation. For example, manners count. Hold the door for individuals as you go into or from the networking venue. Your table manners can affect whether you get business. Knowing when to stay quiet and how to engage people in conversation often is really a factor in whether you continue the conversation about obtaining start up business, especially in local social networking groups. Having appropriate humor, neither being too dried out nor too risque, becomes a factor as well.

From there, your personal style issues. Taking pride in your appearance, yet not being overly concerned about fashion, is a balance that people you meet within business networking events consider seriously. Wearing too much cologne or perfume can turn off a prospective customer. Conservative clothing, without being stuffy, counts as well. As you can tell, little of this deals with your actual tangible knowledge of your profession.

Finally, you get to the actual skills you possess. You risk speaking within the heads of people in these environments, as they tend to become more social. Learn how to build your message into brief, easily understood messages which convey a benefit to the audience members. If you have the time to blend in a story with your message then you find a way for people to remember you away from business card.

Hopefully you begin to comprehend that business networking requires much more than you might have been asked when you worked for a major company. Anti-social behavior and substandard manners could have been tolerated due to your expertise. Business networking requires you to play at a higher level, so do what you can to balance presentation with your skills and then convey benefit to the people you need to meet. You may not get everything right at first, so keep attending these events and focus on a few things to improve each time.

Children's Health & Fitness ? Get Moving

July 12th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From The Bedford Journal?..

According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity in the U.S. has more than tripled in the past 30 years, and more than one-third of children are overweight or obese.

Key to preventing obesity ? and avoiding the related health complications ? is teaching kids to eat a variety of healthy foods and get at least 30 minutes of activity each day.

For this last goal, Bedford residents have a great resource at their fingertips: Bedford Parks and Recreation Department.

During the summer, the department offers a plethora of activities to help kids get up and moving, including swimming at Bedford Memorial Pool, summer camps and a Jr. Olympics. Have a child that has a particular interest? The recreation department offers sports camps in tennis soccer, football baskestball and skateboarding for ages 3-11, as well as archery classes and tennis lessons.

These activities not only can help children stay healthier for the rest of their lives, but can also introduce them to new friends and new skills.

And, of course, parents should set a good example for their little ones and get moving. The recreation department offers plenty of opportunities for adults, including ultimate frisbee, line dancing classes and Zumba. Remember, parenting would be a lot easier if children did as we said, rather than as we do.

(AP) ? Hillary Rodham Clinton became the first U.S. secretary of state to visit Laos in more than five decades, gauging whether a place the United States pummeled with bombs during the Vietnam War could evolve into a new foothold of American influence in Asia.

Clinton met with the communist government's prime minister and foreign minister in the capital of Vientiane on Wednesday, part of a weeklong diplomatic tour of Southeast Asia. The goal is to bolster America's standing in some of the fastest growing markets of the world, and counter China's expanding economic, diplomatic and military dominance of the region.

Thirty-seven years since the end of America's long war in Indochina, Laos is the latest test case of the Obama administration's efforts to "pivot" U.S. foreign policy away from the long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It follows a long period of estrangement between Washington and a once hostile Cold War-era foe, and comes as U.S. relations warm with countries such as Myanmar and Vietnam.

In her meetings, Clinton discussed environmental concerns over a proposed dam on the Mekong River, investment opportunities and joint efforts to clean up the tens of millions of unexploded bombs the U.S. dropped on Laos during the Vietnam War. Greater American support programs in these fields will be included in a multimillion-dollar initiative for Southeast Asia to be announced later this week.

After the meetings, she said they "traced the arc of our relationship from addressing the tragic legacies of the past to finding a way to being partners of the future."

Clinton also visited a Buddhist temple and a U.S.-funded prosthetic center for victims of American munitions.

At the prosthetic center, she met a man named Phongsavath Souliyalat, who told her how he had lost both his hands and his eyesight from a cluster bomb on his 16th birthday.

"We have to do more," Clinton told him. "That's one of the reasons I wanted to come here today, so that we can tell more people about the work that we should be doing together."

The last U.S. secretary of state to visit Laos was John Foster Dulles in 1955. His plane landed after being forced to circle overhead while a water buffalo was cleared from the tarmac.

At that time, the mountainous, sparsely populated nation was at the center of U.S. foreign policy. On leaving office, President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned his successor, John F. Kennedy, that if Laos fell to the communists, all Southeast Asia could be lost as well.

While Vietnam ended up the focal point of America's "domino theory" foreign policy, Laos was drawn deeply into the conflict as the U.S. funded its anti-communist forces and bombed North Vietnamese supply lines and bases.

The U.S. dropped more than 2 million tons of bombs on the impoverished country during its "secret war" between 1964 and 1973 ? about a ton of ordnance for each Laotian man, woman and child. That exceeded the amount dropped on Germany and Japan together in World War II, making Laos the most heavily bombed nation per person in history.

Four decades later, American weapons are still claiming lives. When the war ended, about a third of some 270 million cluster bombs dropped on Laos had failed to detonate, leaving the country awash in unexploded munitions. More than 20,000 people have been killed by ordnance in postwar Laos, according to its government, and contamination throughout the country is a major barrier to agricultural development.

Cleanup has been excruciatingly slow. The Washington-based Legacies of War says only 1 percent of contaminated lands have been cleared and has called on Washington to provide far greater assistance. The State Department has provided $47 million since 1997, though a larger effort could make Laos "bomb-free in our lifetimes," California Rep. Mike Honda argued.

"Let us mend the wounds of the past together so that Laos can begin a new legacy of peace," said Honda, who is Japanese-American.

The U.S. is spending $9 million this year on cleanup operations for unexploded ordnance in Laos, but is likely to offer more in the coming days.

It is part of a larger Obama administration effort to reorient the direction of U.S. diplomacy and commercial policy as the world's most populous continent becomes the center of the global economy over the next century. It is also a reaction to China's expanding influence.

Despite America's difficult history in the region, nations in Beijing's backyard are welcoming the greater engagement ? and the promise of billions of dollars more in American investment. The change has been sudden, with some longtime U.S. foes now seeking a relationship that could serve at least as a counterweight to China's regional hegemony.

Myanmar, also known as Burma, has made significant strides toward reform and democracy after decades as an international pariah, when it was universally scorned for its atrocious labor rights record and its long repression of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's pro-democracy movement. The Obama administration is expected to ease investment restrictions in the country this week.

Vietnam, threatened by Beijing's claims to the resource-rich South China Sea, has dramatically deepened diplomatic and commercial ties with the United States, with their two-country trade now exceeding $22 billion a year ? from nothing two decades ago. Clinton on Tuesday made her third trip to the fast-growing country, meeting with senior communist officials to prod them into greater respect for free expression and labor rights.

Landlocked and impoverished Laos offers fewer resources than its far larger neighbors and has lagged in Asia's economic boom. It remains one of the poorest countries in Asia, even as it hopes to kick-start its development with accession soon to the World Trade Organization.

In recent years, China has stepped up as Laos' principal source of assistance, with loans and grants of up to $350 million over the last two decades. But like many others in its region, Laos' government is wary of Beijing's intentions. And it has kept an envious eye on neighboring Vietnam's 40 percent surge in commercial trade with the United States over the last two years, as well as the sudden rapprochement between the U.S. and nearby Myanmar.

Persistent human rights issues stand in the way of closer relations with Washington. The U.S. remains concerned about the plight of the ethnic Hmong minority, most of whom fled the country after fighting for a U.S.-backed guerilla army during the Vietnam War. Nearly 250,000 resettled in the United States. The U.S. has pressed Laos to respect the rights of returnees from neighboring countries.

Washington also has been seeking greater cooperation from Laos on the search for U.S. soldiers missing in action since the Vietnam War. More than 300 Americans remain unaccounted for in Laos.

And it is pressing the government to hold off on a proposed $3.5 billion dam project across the Mekong River. The dam would be the first across the river's mainstream and has sparked a barrage of opposition from neighboring countries and environmental groups, which warn that tens of millions of livelihoods could be at stake.

The project is currently on hold and Washington hopes to stall it further with the promise of funds for new environmental studies.

(AP) ? The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that a rural town lacks the authority to impose tougher water-quality standards on a livestock farm than the state requires.

Magnolia, a community about 30 miles south of Madison, granted Larson Acres Inc. a permit in 2007 when it wanted to expand, but included a number of conditions because residents blamed it for polluting their water supply. The farm initially had 1,000 cows and now has about 2,900.

Among the conditions, the farm had to allow the town to conduct monthly water quality tests on its land, and it had to follow certain crop-rotation strategies to reduce nitrate buildup.

The farm sued, arguing that pollution-control measures are laid out by the state and can't be modified by individual towns.

The state Supreme Court agreed, ruling that the town exceeded its authority by imposing additional measures.

The case has been watched by rural Midwest communities struggling to deal with the expansion of so-called factory farms. States throughout the farm belt have seen big farms get bigger as the agriculture industry continues to consolidate.

Similar cases have been filed in six other Midwestern states, but Wisconsin's is believed to be the first to reach a state supreme court.

The lead plaintiff was Magnolia resident John Adams, who says he can't see the nearly 3,000 cows on Larson Acres' farm two miles from his home, but when the wind blows he can smell them.

The stench gives him and his wife headaches. They blame the farm for contaminating their air and polluting the groundwater well they use for drinking, bathing and watering their garden. They no longer feel safe eating the vegetables they grow.

"A township should have the right to establish guidelines to keep its people safe, but it doesn't," Adams said in September when the high court first heard arguments in the case. "Those of us who are being affected, it's like there's nothing we can do."

At that September hearing, Larson Acres attorney Eric McLeod told the justices that a town could introduce its own water quality regulations, just not as part of the permit-granting process. For example, Magnolia could monitor drinking water for nitrates and then sue the farm if pollution levels rose above certain limits, he said.

Similar cases have been filed in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio and Oklahoma. Two juries in Missouri have handed out multimillion-dollar awards to homeowners who complained of intolerable odors from factory farms.

Midwest can't get any relief from oppressive heat

DETROIT (AP) ? When the air conditioner stopped in Ashley Jackson's Southfield, Mich., home, so too did normal conversations and nightly rest.

"Inside the house it was 91 degrees. ... I wasn't talking to anybody. Nobody was talking to anybody," said Jackson, 23, who works as a short-order cook in Detroit. "We mostly slept, but it was hard to sleep because of the heat. I probably got about four hours of sleep each night."

St. Louis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Chicago and several other Midwest cities already have broken heat records this week or are on the verge of doing so. And with even low temperatures setting record highs, some residents have no means of relief, day or night.

The National Weather Service said the record-breaking heat that has baked the nation's midsection for several days was slowly moving into the mid-Atlantic states and Northeast. Excessive-heat warnings remained in place Friday for all of Iowa, Indiana and Illinois as well as much of Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Kentucky.

St. Louis hit a record high of 105 on Wednesday and a record low of 83. In Wisconsin, the coolest Milwaukee and Madison got was 81 in the early morning, beating previous low records by 2 and 4 degrees respectively. Temperatures didn't fall below 79 in Chicago, 78 in Grand Rapids, Mich., and 75 in Indianapolis.

"When a day starts out that warm, it doesn't take as much time to reach high temperatures in the low 100s," said Marcia Cronce, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. "You know it'll be a warm day when you start out at 80 degrees."

In Chicago on Thursday, the Shedd Aquarium lost power as temperatures soared to 103 degrees, a record for July 5. Officials said emergency generators immediately kicked in and the outage never threatened any of animals, but several hundred visitors were sent back out into the heat.

Not even the setting of the sun brought respite as temperatures hovered around 90 degrees downtown at 10 p.m. Some visitors made their way to Millennium Park to splash in the park's kid-friendly Crown Fountain.

"It's hotter here than it is in Arizona," said Mary Dominis, of Tempe, who brought her daughter along to play in the water. "I came here to visit my family and to get away from the heat of Arizona."

Ruben Davila, 32, of Northern California, was also in Chicago visiting family, and at the park seeking some cool relief.

"The heat has made it difficult to walk around and view the sites," said Davila, who was accompanied by his wife and three children.

The heat has been much worse than a mere inconvenience for some. St. Louis officials have reported three heat-related deaths in recent days, and officials in the Chicago area said two people there may have died due to heat Wednesday. A coroner in Rock County, Wis., said the death of an 83-year-old woman there was definitely due to the heat.

It was hot enough to buckle a roadway Wednesday afternoon in Chicago, where Columbus Drive cracked and bulged, forcing the city to close the road for repairs.

And with the National Weather Service's excessive heat warning for the city extended through Friday evening, Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard canceled all summer school classes for the day.

But relief is on the way. The weather service forecast that cooler temperatures and scattered showers could bring some relief across the Upper Midwest going into the weekend, but warned of strong to severe storms in the area.

Meanwhile, many cities have tried to help by opening cooling centers and extending the hours for their public pools. Compounding the high heat in Michigan was damage wrought by storms. About 157,000 homes and businesses across the state were without power early Friday.

Lack of electricity also is likely to compound the misery for many in the storm-ravaged East as the dangerous temperatures move in. Outages reported late Thursday included nearly 230,000 in West Virginia. More than 71,000 were without power Friday morning in Virginia.

Maryland, which still had more than 45,000 without power, also reported Thursday that eight people had died of heat-related causes in recent days.

The heat has also taken a toll on agriculture.

Dean Hines, the owner of Hines Ranch Inc. in the western Wisconsin town of Ellsworth, said he found one of his 80 dairy cows dead Thursday, an apparent victim of the heat. He said he was worried about the rest of his herd, in terms of death toll, reproductive consequences and milk production.

"We're using fans and misters to keep them cool," he said. "It's been terrible. When it doesn't cool down at night, the poor animals don't have a chance to cool down."

Mattocks lifts Whitecaps past Rapids

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:59 p.m. ET July 4, 2012

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) - Darren Mattocks scored in the 43rd minute to lift the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night.

Mattocks scored his fourth goal of the season on a defensive breakdown and gave Vancouver (8-4-5) its third win in five games and the second-year team's first victory in Colorado. Joe Cannon, who had 25 shutouts while playing for the Rapids, earned his seventh shutout of the season for the Whitecaps.

Colorado (7-9-1) also lost 1-0 to Vancouver on June 16. The latest loss pushed the Rapids seven points behind the third-place Whitecaps in the Western Conference.

The Whitecaps had one scoring chance in the first half, and Mattocks delivered after Colorado had dominated play.

The Rapids had two chances a minute apart as Cannon denied them both.

Conor Casey broke free along the left sideline and got off a left-footed kick from 30 yards out. Cannon got on all fours to smother the ball in the 31st minute.

A minute later Martin Rivero sent a cross to Jeff Larentowicz, who got a header off but Cannon leaped high and put two hands on the ball to catch it.

Jordan Harvey tried to get the ball down low for Vancouver only to watch Drew Moor step in front to stop the play. However, Moor fanned on the ball and Mattocks had a clear path to it and poked it into an open net.

The Rapids kept the pressure on Cannon in the second half without any success. Cannon steered aside a shot by Brian Mullein from the slot in the 50th minute. Jamie Smith had a clear shot form 30 yards out deflected by a defender wide of the left post in the 61st.

Glades Golf Course on the market

TAIWANESE-born developer Edwin Yu is set to cut ties with The Glades Golf Course in Robina.

Mr Yu, who paid $17 million for the course in 2003, has placed the facility on the market and property insiders have tipped that it could realise offers in the region of $20 million.

They say high-net worth mainland Chinese and hotel groups are expected to battle for ownership of the Greg Norman-designed, blue-chip course.

The facility is for sale in an expressions of interest campaign being handled by Tony Bargwanna and Sean Dollar, of Ray White Hotels, and Greg Bell and Adam Young, of Ray White Commercial Gold Coast.

The move to sell comes as Mr Yu cuts back on his Australian assets to concentrate on a range of ventures he is spearheading in China's booming markets.

?
It is also understood that Mr Yu is spending less time in Australia.

Mr Dollar confirmed that the marketing agents expected the course to attract significant interest from mainland China. "Large parcels of land like that on the Gold Coast just don't come up, full stop," he said.

He said Robina also lacked large-scale accommodation facilities so there was a chance hotel groups would see the course as a development option.

"The Glades is renowned as being one of the most challenging courses on the Gold Coast so there is the opportunity to put some large-scale accommodation there and, pending council approval, attack that Asian golfing market."

The offering includes The Glades 18-hole golf course, ranked among the top 50 resort-style courses in Australia, practice facilities with golf driving range, a recreation centre including gymnasium, a pair of tennis courts and two beach-volleyball courts.

Also included in the package are a swimming pool and the Glades Club House and pro shop, the licensed Boardwalk Restaurant, and function and conference rooms.

The course became the focus of controversy when Mr Yu and developer John Fish proposed using it in a land-swap deal with members of the Surfers Paradise Golf Club.
